Cormac Meagher and his dog Tex love to run at Lincoln Park. Tex loves children and is very good with them. Meagher and his wife Megan just had a baby and they were concerned that Tex would not be as responsive to commands but according to Cormac "He's been just great."
Cormac Meagher got his dog Tex at Blue Dog Rescue outside of Austin, Texas where he was living at the time. Meagher grew up here but moved there for work and brought Tex back when he and his wife Megan returned to Seattle.
Tex is a blend of Black Labrador Retriever and "Maybe Border Collie, we're not too sure," said Meagher. Tex is all black except for some white fur on his chest. They had to pass through an approval process for him, let him spend the night to get acclimated and were finally approved. Now Tex loves it here.
"He loves the neighbor dog. They love running the fence line," Meagher said," and he loves digging up moles. He doesn't hurt them, he just likes to play with them, but I've had to re-seed the lawn numerous times."
They enjoy running through Lincoln Park or up to the Myrtle Street water tower, "He's a great companion to have out on a run," Meagher explained.
There's a special diet for Tex because he had a "stomach issue" so he's on a low residue, "real bland diet for the rest of his life. He gets special food that I pick up at the West Seattle VCA Animal Hospital," said Meagher, but he does get milkbones and the occasional sliced turkey.
Being from Texas, Tex however, doesn't seem to like hats or umbrellas."He seems to have a thing about it," Meagher said laughing, "It's kind of like a magnet. He wants to remove the hat or see what's going on with the umbrella. He does it to me. I've learned to stop wearing hats in the house. I'll get comfortable on the couch watching a game and he comes up and removes it for me."
Maybe Tex is used to a sunnier place or possibly he is just playing a game. "He'll take it off and run around the house with it, kind of like a game of keep away. He loves doing stuff like that, taking balls from other dogs," continued Meagher.
Tex, despite his apparent bloodlines, is not fond of the water except for a singular location. He avoids swimming almost everywhere but, "will go in just off the Alki Lighthouse," said Meagher, "That's the only place he will go in. He won't go in at any of the parks. I even bought him a little plastic pool for the summer and he won't go in."
