Original story:
Juanita L. Wright, aka Juanita L. Mars and Juanita Carpenter, 43, has been charged with four counts of vehicular assault while driving under the influence of alcohol, according to charging documents released Nov. 2.
On Oct. 28 around 11 p.m. Wright allegedly struck five pedestrians with her pickup at the intersection of 1st Ave s and s Massachusetts St. in the SOHO district of Seattle.
Her blood was drawn two hours after the crash and registered 0.29 percent blood alcohol content. The legal limit is .08 percent. Police found several cans of empty and partially empty beer cans in the vehicle, according to charging documents.
Four of the pedestrians were taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries and one escaped with only minor scraps and bruises, according to the documents.
It was a Thursday evening when seven friends were leaving the SODO Showbox Theater after a concert, according to a Certification for Determination of Probable Cause released by SPD Detective Mark Smithers.
The group had successfully crossed the northbound lanes of 1st Ave s and was crossing the southbound lanes when Wright’s vehicle allegedly failed to slow down as she approached the intersection. She slammed on the brakes and a nearby construction worker yelled at the pedestrians just before she plowed into the group, according to charging documents.
Five of the seven pedestrians were allegedly struck by the vehicle, resulting in four serious injuries, according to charging documents.
A 28-year-old woman suffered a “traumatic brain injury” requiring the removal of part of her skull and leg and pelvic fractures.
A 52-year-old man suffered rib and back fractures.
A 47-year-old woman suffered fractures to her arms, legs and pelvis.
A 31-year-old woman suffered fractures to both legs.
The fifth struck pedestrian escaped with only bruises and scrapes.
Harborview spokespersons were unavailable for comment at the time of print, but the Seattle Times reported that spokeswoman Susan Gregg-Hanson said two of the victims remain in critical condition, one is in stable condition and one has been released as of Monday, Nov. 1.
Wright allegedly came to a stop after the collision and was detained by a Showbox security guard until police arrived, according to charging documents. She got out of the vehicle when the security guard approached and he observed her pacing back and forth. He told police that he thought she might leave the scene, so he asked her for her identification and removed her keys from the pickup's ignition.
When police arrived they noted Wright displaying obvious signs of intoxication and found several empty or partially empty 24 oz. cans of an 8.2 percent beer, including a six pack of beer on the floorboard next to the brake, according to charging documents.
Wright was given a field sobriety test and officers said it was “apparent that she was grossly impaired.”
She was taken to Harborview Medical Center for a blood draw two hours after the crash and registered a .29 percent blood alcohol content, over three and a half times the legal limit of .08 percent, according to charging documents.
Wright’s bail has been set at $250,000 and she is being held in King County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault.
Her arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 15 at the King County Courthouse, according to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office press secretary Dan Donohoe.
According to charging documents, Wright was charged with driving under the influence in Pierce County in 1990, but that the case is unresolved. She was convicted of a felony theft in 1993 and “has several convictions and citations for driving without a license, driving without insurance and a moving violation for speeding (in 2005).”
Wright told investigators she is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada and told police she has homes in both countries, according to charging documents.
