Press Release:
Robert Glennon, author of the New York Times bestseller “Unquenchable” and a University of Arizona Professor of Law and Public Policy, will be among the featured speakers during World Water Week, presented by Chief Sealth International High School students at the school March 21-25.
Congressman Jay Inslee will introduce the festival, which will include a dedication by representatives of the Duwamish Tribe. Famed global water activist Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau, will deliver a pre-recorded video message for the audience.
The weeklong event will include lectures and workshops promoting local conservation and global action related to global water awareness, starting with Glennon’s free public lecture in the Chief Sealth auditorium on Monday and culminating in a school-wide service project on Friday.
The World Water Week schedule includes:
Monday: A free public lecture by Robert Glennon at 7 p.m. accompanied by a special video message from Alexandra Cousteau. The event will kick off with a water resource fair at 6:15 p.m. and follow with introductions by Congressman Jay Inslee and members of the Duwamish Tribe.
Tuesday: An evening event in which Chief Sealth International students and parents learn about environmental- and water-oriented career and college opportunities.
Wednesday: Local water activist and storyteller Peter Donaldson educates students about where our water comes from and how our wastewater is treated.
Thursday: An all-school workshop on global water scarcity
Friday: A school-wide fundraiser to raise money for sustainable water and sanitation projects in Honduras, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and India. The school hopes to raise $12,000 for Seattle-based Water 1st International. In addition, there will be a teach-in that will include a diverse range of water-themed workshops for students and teachers.
This festival is being organized by Chief Sealth senior Molly Freed, her teacher Noah Zeichner and a group of 50 Chief Sealth students and teachers, in collaboration with several local organizations. Last summer, the Bezos Family Foundation selected Freed and Zeichner as Bezos Scholars -- two of only 24 across the nation -- to attend the Aspen Ideas Festival. At the festival, scholars were directed to create their own local Ideas Festival, and Freed and Zeicher developed the idea of World Water Week.
