On December 8, Hilltop Educator Institute hosts Seattle’s premiere of the groundbreaking short documentary film about what can we learn of children’s views about their world, if we listen to children’s ideas and closely observe their actions.  “The Voices of Children” tells the story of an international team of educators, advocates, social scientists and filmmakers journey to sites in five countries, sparking conversations about “rights.”  The 6:30 p.m. screening will be introduced by the co-creator of the film, John Nimmo and followed by a discussion with Nimmo. 

This documentary aims to expand on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by advocating for a more inclusive view of children’s rights, from the perspective of the children themselves.  A powerful tool that will effectively demonstrate children’s understanding of what connects us all as human beings, this documentary explores how we can better listen to and represent children, by inviting children to speak for themselves.

Following the screening, participants will hear insights into the process and vision of this project, and join a dialogue about “listening” to children across cultural contexts. Professionals from all fields -  including educators, civic leaders, religious leaders, activists, and parents – are invited to come together for this discussion. Together we can explore our image of children to support human rights and sustain a more just society.
