 Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is bracing for a potential district-wide strike as the Seattle Education Association (SEA) teachers' union prepares to walk off the job at 11:59 p.m. tonight, September 1, 2026, if no contract agreement is reached. A strike would delay the start of the school year, which is scheduled to begin tomorrow, September 2.

With the clock ticking, both sides remain in intense mediation trying to bridge a gap shaped by a massive district-wide budget crisis.

Superintendent Urges Focus on Students, Warns of Financial Ruin

At a press conference today, Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner addressed the looming deadline, noting that a mediator has been actively working with both sides over the last 24 hours.

"I'm very appreciative of the mediator. I think sometimes, you know, when you're in a sense of very important negotiation, heightened bargaining, it's good to have a third party," Shuldiner said. "He's really helped move the needle forward".

Despite the mediation progress, Shuldiner emphasized the intense pressure of the district's $87 million budget deficit. He referred to the financial crisis as "the sword of Damocles that hangs over us all," but thanked the SEA for recognizing the district's financial constraints. "There's been a good sense of being a valid narrator around showing the receipts of our budget," he said.

The School Board of Directors has instructed Shuldiner to balance the needs of students with fiscal responsibility. "What they have empowered me to do is to center our children, try to get a deal done that's really good for kids and allows us to keep the lights on because I think nobody here would like us to be completely insolvent," Shuldiner explained. He warned that if the district cannot pay back borrowed funds under binding conditions, "there's a possibility that you lose control of the district".

Core Disputes: Compensation vs. Deficits

The labor dispute centers on significant differences between the union's demands and the district's counter-proposal:

• Wages and Benefits: The SEA is demanding a 6% wage increase over three years (1.5% in year one, 2.0% in year two, and 2.5% in year three) on top of state-funded cost-of-living adjustments. Additionally, they are seeking a tax-free health reimbursement account (VEBA) to help offset rising premiums. SPS has countered with a flat 8.8% raise (guaranteeing nearly 9% over three years: 2.6% in 2026-27, 3.6% in 2027-28, and 2.6% in 2028-29) uncoupled from inflation. The district is also offering VEBA contributions of $10 per month in the second year and $15 per month in the third year.

If negotiations fail and teachers strike at midnight, Shuldiner clarified that the district is "not locking anybody out".

"We want everybody to show up. We think it's great," Shuldiner said, noting that principals, custodial staff, and food services are expected to report to work. "We're going to do everything we can that if there is a strike, that we can be able to serve our kids with food and things like that".

The district is also preparing to roll out rapid, multilingual communications to families. In the event that schools must be closed, the district plans to deploy talking points that translate immediately into a family's preferred language, school messenger emails, and automated robocalls with human-translated messages.

With hours left until the midnight deadline, Shuldiner remains hopeful but focused on the task at hand. "I'm going to go upstairs after we're done here and keep on working," he told reporters.
