Sound Transit has officially issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to select a General Contractor/Construction Manager (GC/CM) to oversee construction of the underground Alaska Junction Station and its associated infrastructure.
Located primarily below ground near the heart of West Seattle's commercial core along Southwest Alaska Street between 40th and 41st avenues Southwest, the new facility will serve as the terminus for the 3.9-mile West Seattle Link Extension line. Beyond digging the station box and building the underground station itself, the GC/CM contract package covers major utility relocations, surface and roadway restoration, and site preparation around the junction corridor.
Sound Transit is employing the GC/CM alternative delivery model to bring the contractor on board early in the design phase. This strategy is intended to optimize constructability, manage risk during heavy underground urban excavation, and coordinate complex utility relocations.
The procurement announcement follows several major project milestones, including reaching the 30 percent design milestone, which incorporated over $2 billion in cost-saving design refinements while preserving the main line and stations. Additionally, the Sound Transit Board has approved key property acquisition and land authorization packages to secure the necessary right-of-way along the alignment.
Early management and pre-construction work are currently gearing up, with major heavy construction contracts covering bridges, tunnel drives, guideways, and deep foundations slated for award through 2027. Target revenue service for the West Seattle Link Extension line remains on track for 2035.
