False calls tie up 911 lines
Please lock your cell phone keypads and turn off the 911 autodials. Seattle's 911 system is being overwhelmed with 700 calls a day being triggered accidentally when phones are jostled in a pocket or purse. And if you give your child an old cell phone to play with, please remember to remove the battery first, as the phones can still be used to make 911 calls, even if your account is no longer active.
The arbors aren't too high in one part of Arbor Heights, where someone sheared the limbs on one side of several newly planted trees.
Bound for playoffs
It's playoff time and the Ballard Beaver girls are in the thick of the basketball action with their first game this week.
Ballard was seeded in seventh place in the eight team bracket. Their possible first round opponents include Woodinville (13 and 1), Garfield (13 and 1) or Inglemoor (11 and 3).
The playoff tournament is double elimination. Ballard must win two games to advance or lose two games to end their post season.
Head Coach Karen Blair said her Beavers will fine-tune their games and work on minimizing errors in practice.
The why and how of sustainable living
The word "sustainability" is getting a lot of mileage these days. But just what does it mean, and why is the idea of sustainability so popular? With this article, Sustainable Ballard members are starting a monthly column to explore some of the ways to practice sustainable living in the greater Ballard community.
Right now it seems like we have plenty of everything but the days of cheap petroleum are ending. And a tight oil supply affects much more than transportation and home heating. Petroleum affects our daily life.
Swimming for state
Ballard High School's top boys swimmers were eager to compete in the King County Aquatic Center's pool for the WIAA State Championship Meet held on February 17 and 18.
"It's world class for racing. The water is cooler and deeper, it makes you go faster," said senior Gabe Pratt.
As one of the team's strongest swimmers, Pratt anchors the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.
He enjoys the role. "It's fun being the last one in, going all out to see what you can do," he said.
The 200 free relay team (1:33.39) was seeded 14th going into the state meet.
Building community
The continued growth of the Internet and busy schedules brings a certain, unavoidable amount of social isolation. Some of us meet in local bars or coffee shops, or form alliances through work or other daily commitments, but too often we don't get to know the neighbors right on our own street.
What about a place where neighbors and community members of all ages can come together and be part of the same group? That's the idea behind community centers - a local, friendly, low-cost forum in which to connect, or reconnect, with neighbors.
Carrying the torch
When Suzanne Hall first walked through the doors of the Ballard Boys and Girls Club, she had an uphill battle to climb. Ten years ago, after Hall's parents divorced, her mother used to drop her off at the club while she worked. Back then the family depended on the Ballard Food Bank for food, donated clothing from women's shelters and financial help from other charitable groups to survive. Things got worse when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
But young Suzanne made friends at the club, liked the nice counselors, the activities and cool kids to hang out with.
