Morgan gets new park

Where once there was to be a monorail station, now there will be a pocket park.

The Seattle Monorail Project board of directors approved an agreement May 4 to sell the former Morgan Junction monorail station site for $1.3 million to Beveridge Investments, a limited liability corporation owned by Gary Sink, who owns the adjacent Beveridge Place Pub.

Sink agreed to sell the northern portion of the monorail station property, formerly Fauntleroy Autoworks, to the city of Seattle for a future park.

Honor program cut

Parents of bright middle school students are angry with West Seattle High School because the ninth-grade honors program is being cancelled and now it's too late to register somewhere else.

Instead of being grouped together for advanced classes, the "highly capable" freshmen next year will take all of their classes mixed with the rest of the student body. Honors students could attend regular classes and be given extra assignments.

Youth murder suspect jailed

A suspect wanted in the August 18, 2003 murder of a 14-year old West Seattle boy was arrested last week in the 2200 block of Southwest Holden Street.

The suspect had shot the victim in the 3500 block of Southwest Juneau Street multiple times and fled, successfully evading capture.

The boy was pronounced dead at Harborview Medical Center.

Seattle Police Homicide detectives received a break in the case in April 2005 when a homeowner in West Seattle discovered the murder weapon in heavy brush in the 5400 block of 40th Avenue Southwest.

Chamber to honor Leverett, Williams

Mayor Greg Nickels will next week join the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce to honor the many contributions of Terry Williams and Dawn Leverett with its community service awards.

The awards presentation will take place on Thursday, May 18th, from at 7:30 a.m. at Salty's

"Dawn Leverett has stepped up to the plate for the Chamber and helped orchestrate our annual fundraiser for the last three years; is tireless in her promotion of the Chamber and its many activities and responsibilities," the chamber said. "She has participated on the board of directors since 2004.

Judy Duff, 56, dies of cancer

Judy Duff, a beloved 48-year resident of the North Highline area, passed away May 1, 2006, after having lived with cancer for over two years. Judy had recently celebrated her 56th birthday in April and died peacefully at home with her husband, Dave Duff, and daughter, Deanna Duff.

Judy was raised in the North Highline area by her parents, Valenar and Norma Smith, and is survived by her mother and siblings, Valenar Smith, Jr. and Sandra Hassler. Judy graduated from Evergreen High School and remained a proud Wolverine throughout her life.
