Lazy Gardener - Flowers say love

By now, you've recovered from celebrating Cinco de Mayo - just in time, too.

Mother's Day is May 14 and a traditional day to give flowers. Rather than a handful of cut blooms that will be gone in a week, give a new and uncommon plant that will say, "I love you" for years. No, Hallmark didn't pay for the plug.

Village Green Perennial Nursery in Westwood/White Center is celebrating Mother's Day with two days of events. On Saturday, May 13, two classes will be hosted beginning at 11 a.m.

Gypsie Goss hit by car, recovers

By Annette Herrick

In March, Gypsie Goss was riding her bicycle when struck by a car which sent her flying through the air, then hit the pavement and bounced, sustaining a broken pelvis

The driver was determined by police to be an illegal alien with an illegal license hit her.

Goss is the wife of Aaron Goss, who runs Aaron's Bicycle Repair at Morgan Junction. She also works at the shop. Goss was riding ahead of her with son, Braxton.

Was it just her time to be hit? Gypsie thinks so.

My West Seattle - My favorite tranquil places

Come with me to my four favorite places in West Seattle. Places I visit whenever I get a chance. They are tranquil spots, each with a differing view, but each with something in common, the lulling sound of an inland sea.

Let's start near Salty's and a bench that knows me well. It is the first one on the trail south of the boathouse. To the east, the snow-peaked Cascades peek through the steel arches atop Seahawks Stadium. In the foreground of this splendid sea- and cityscape, barking sea lions cavort atop the large rusting buoy that floats 200 feet offshore.

West Seattle High School's honors mistake

Ending the ninth-grade honors program at West Seattle High School may meet the requirements of a federal grant, but we question the value to the children they are supposed to educate. We hope a review by new chief academic officer Carla Santorno will reverse this short-sighted decision.

The problem is that the grant requires that all students be lumped together. Instead of being grouped together for advanced classes, the "highly capable" freshmen next year will take all of their classes mixed with the rest of the student body.
