Pioneer church celebrating 100 years

Members of Burien's Free Methodist Church will celebrate a century of service in the community this weekend.

Highlighting four days of special services and festivities will be the Rev. Matt Whitehead, Pacific Northwest Conference superintendent, who will speak Sunday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m.

The service will include a multimedia presentation of the church's history as well as special music. Cake and ice cream will be served following the benediction.

Town Square park plans to be displayed

Recently completed designs for the Town Square public park will be on display at a community open house on Wednesday, May 31, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The latest information and designs for streets serving Town Square and for the new City Hall/King County Regional Library building also will be presented.

City Hall is located at 415 SW 150th St.

Town Square's one-acre park/open space near Southwest 152nd Street and Fourth Avenue Southwest will be its focal point and the community's main gathering place.

Beren has McDermott exit strategy

Steve Beren admitted to 34th District Republicans on May 16 that challenging Washington's "congressman for life" is a daunting task.

But, Beren declared, "There's no candidate I'd rather run against than [Seventh District Democratic Rep.] Jim McDermott.

"In King County, in the Seventh District, for too long we've had a controversial, extremist congressman" who has given his constituents "a lack of representation."

Smith foe is running to win

Steve Cofchin admits that, in the past, he's voted for Ninth District Democratic Congressman Adam Smith.

But after a friend challenged him, Cofchin checked Smith's voting record in Congress.

"He was only a few points from [Seventh District Democratic Congressman Jim] McDermott, and on taxes he was to the left of McDermott," Cofchin told 34th District Republicans at their May 16 meeting in West Seattle.

This fall, Cofchin will vote for himself as the Republican candidate challenging Smith's re-election bid.

Des Moines police officers responding to a report of a man yelling and screaming around 10:30 p.m. May 15 in the 21900 block of

The man who was the subject of the call could not provide identification, but when he gave officers his name they ran a background check and learned that he had a felony warrant for escape from the Washington State Department of Corrections.

An officer put the man in an arm hold, but he escaped from that restraint. The officer tried to grab him again, and this time the suspect fled on foot.

Officers in pursuit tased him, causing the man to fall to the ground.

Kennedy survives, but Highline is eliminated

Just as a bright, spectacular sunset appeared and dominated the sky from behind Highline Stadium to the Olympic Mountains and beyond, Kennedy pulled down the curtains on a 1-0 state quarterfinal boys soccer victory over Blanchet.

Whether the orange and red clouds were a sign or not remains to be seen, but the Lancers will be playing in the state semifinals starting Friday in a place in Sumner called Sunset Chevrolet Stadium.

Mt Rainier knocked out of tournament

Mount Rainier played North Mason and couldn't score so they couldn't win -- losing 3-0 in first round action of the 3A West Central District fastpitch tournament.

The Rams' season ended with the loss, 11-8.

North Mason scored in the first, third and fifth inning.

There were some nice plays in this game, but, as far as the North Mason runs go, all three were undeserved.

"We did it to ourselves, " said Angelique Porter.

Tennis standouts ride off to state

Highline and Kennedy moved on to state with their two schools' strong overall play at the 3A West Central District Tournament at Sprinker Tuesday and Thursday.

Kennedy's Bryan Thorp beat Highline's Donnie Stallmann, 6-4, 6-3, and used an oft-used pro sports hyperbole to describe how he could improve so quickly against someone he had just lost to the week earlier -Stallman -- in the Seamount League tournament.

Thorp called himself being 'in a zone.'

Two lose Highline Council positions

Four new people were elected to the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council May 18 while four incumbents were re-elected and two incumbents were bounced out.

Council members Russ Kay, Steve Cox and Barbara Peters were re-elected but Mary Ann Matthias and Steve Jeffries lost their seats on the council.

The new members are Teresa Vert, Anette King, Cynthia Ruiz and Liz Giba.

The elected, 13-member North Highline Unincorporated Area Council was established by King County to serve as a liaison between the county and residents of White Center and Boulevard Park,
