Richard William Gross

June 26, 1949 - August 5, 2006

In loving memory of a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. Son of the late William Danielson and Shelia May Wahlgren. Former wife of 25 years Sabina Lucille Gross, father of Richard James (mother Cyndi Wanzer), Charles Everett (mother Lorriane Tucker), Francis Julian and Anthony Roger Gross, brothers to Gary A.

Dorothy "Dottie" Howard

Born February 9, 1938 in Watertown, SD, and passed away August 4, 2006 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 68. Dottie is survived by her Daughter Jodie Dobson and son-in-law David Dobson of Spokane, Washington, Six grandchildren, and one great grandchild of Spokane, Washington. One brother Jim and sister in law Jean Gabert of Watertown SD, her step father George Comonelle of Seattle, Washington. One sister Shirley Pratt and her husband Ernest of Watertown, SD., The Miller and Knoxx families of Seattle, Many friends and family members of Seattle, and all of the grand kids on the hill.

Joseph Edward McQuade

Joseph Edward McQuade, born in Litchville, North Dakota, on November 17, 1919, as the second child to Martin L. McQuade and Olga A. Nelson-McQuade, passed away on August 2, 2006, at the age of 86.

There were nine McQuade children in all. Marvin was born first (now deceased), Joe, John (also deceased), Melford, Pete, Norma, Pat and Patsy (twins) and Jeannie.

Nora G. Pratt

Nora was peacefully taken to Heaven on July 28, 2006 where she joined her late husband, Jim, and eldest son, Dennis.

Nora was born in Seattle on February 8, 1931 to Robert and Myrtle Fullerton. Experiencing a hard life growing up, she promised herself that her children and their children would have a better life. She gave exactly that, bestowing upon her family, as well as her friends, her strength, kindness and a love that no other could give.

Annexation 101: Strong communities benefit us all

This summer, the cities of Seattle and Burien are working to craft a joint proposal as to which portions of the North Highline area may be annexed into each city.

For the uninitiated, North Highline includes unincorporated White Center, as well as many surrounding unincorporated communities like Boulevard Park, Top Hat, Beverly Park and others.

Why does North Highline need to join a city? The state's Growth Management Act (GMA) gives the clear instruction that cities are the proper providers of local government services for urban and suburban communities.

Burien will know costs before inevitable change

In response to the articles on North Highline annexation in the July 26 Times/News, I would like to offer this clarification on behalf of the entire Burien City Council.

After studying the potential annexation of the North Highline area for several years, the Burien City Council took the lead in developing a cooperative agreement with King County and Seattle, to gather information that will lead to the best solution for all concerned.

Why are we continuing to discuss this potential annexation?

Des Moines attorney to run for high court

Former King County Superior Court Judge Jeanette Burrage has announced that she is a candidate for the Washington Supreme Court.

Burrage, who lives in Des Moines, served as a superior court judge for five years, where she presided over both civil and criminal trials.

She is challenging Supreme Court Justice Tom Chambers, who is seeking re-election to Seat 9.

"The role of a Supreme Court justice is to interpret the constitution and laws as the drafters intended, not to re-write them," Burrage declared.

Des Moines landlords cited

A complaint was issued last week against three Des Moines landlords, alleging they failed to notify their tenants that lead-based paint could pose serious health threats to children or pregnant women.

Named in the complaint by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were Stanley Xu, Breakwater Apartments L.L.C., and Longwell Company.

Longwell Company manages the Breakwater Apartments at 23502 16th Pl.

King County sheriff files P-I complaint

A formal complaint against the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has been filed by the King County Sheriff's office with the Washington News Council.

The complaint targets on ongoing series of articles-"Conduct Unbecoming"-that is highly critical of the sheriff's office.

Both Burien and SeaTac contract with the sheriff's office for city police services.

In the complaint to the news council, which was dated July 28, Sheriff Sue Rahr said the P-I series and related stories "have been intentionally biased, unfair, malicious, and lack balance" in their portrayal of the sh
