Halt the free rides

The continuing drama of the Seattle School District looking under rocks and in backs of drawers to save money in the face of looming deficits sometimes takes on the reality television series look. Ideas are floated, a long discussion follows, then the board seems to toss up its hands and demand more information from the district administrators.

Another drama, right here in West Seattle, is simmering and we suspect coming to a boil, and that is the shotgun marriage of Pathfinder and Cooper.

Don't swim in Hicks Lake

Wish to make a comment and a warning to your readers.

Your Explorer 2006-2007 edition was well done and is appreciated for the work that was put into creating it.

The warning we wish to describe under Parks, page 44, has listed Lakewood Park with Hicks Lake within having a swim beach, which is true. But feel it would lead people to think it is safe to swim in the lake.

As a member of a group called Friends of Hicks Lake we would advice people not to. Why?

$18 billion tunnel?

Thank you, West Seattle Herald and Nick Licata, for speaking out against the city council's plan to beautify the waterfront at the cost of the entire city's environment.

Look at the real cost of this plan, which replaces a 50 year old facility but makes no provision for the increased traffic the 500,000 people the mayor wishes to bring into the city will generate:

Tunnel Costs

Construction cost estimate - $5.5 billion

City Light costs - $.5 billion

Aurora reconstruction - $.4 billion

Paving taking too long

I am a merchant in the Alaska Junction area. California Avenue is torn up for several blocks right in the heart of the junction.

We were told that it would take eight weeks for this project to be completed. That means it should have ended by yesterday. Now they are saying it won't be finished until Thanksgiving!

There good hardworking dedicated people serving our community who cannot maintain their businesses because the road is messed up and what little parking we had is now gone.

'No' to Seattle

As a thirty year White Center Homeowner, I am writing to clarify that the so-called "White Center Homeowners Association" does not represent the opinions of all of us.

I do not know who or how many belong to that group, but the majority of my neighbors and friends of the White Center Area do not belong to it, and do not agree with them about possible annexation to Seattle.

No one in this area has heard of when or where this 'Association" meets, nor do they publicize that information so other homeowners could attend.

Return old totem pole

I know it's been a coupla months now, but I am disappointed with the new totem pole.

When viewed up close, it appears to be just a half shell attached to a steel pole. When viewed from the street, it has no detail.

The excuse that the old totem pole was pest infested was a poor excuse for its replacement. It could have been removed, fumigated and returned to its rightful place.

Bring back the old totem pole.

Op-Ed - What will our commute look like?

With the pending construction to replace the Alaskan Way and the Spokane Street viaducts I am working on the critical issue of how to keep traffic moving during the construction period which could take up to 10 years.

As every West Seattle resident knows, the commute from West Seattle can be very challenging. We are often caught in gridlock when there is an accident or heavy Port or railroad traffic.
