'Long Haired Pete' remembered

When Pete Reed, a vendor for the homeless newspaper "Reel Change" passed away recently, his friends started a memorial for him at the northwest corner of Market Street and 22nd Avenue Northwest.

Reed was better known as "Long Haired Pete," on the streets of Ballard.

According to the King County Medical Examiner's office, Reed was 52 years old.

No more buses for Seaview

A group of Seaview Avenue Northwest residents and business owners want King County Metro to restore bus service to their area, but transit officials say it's not cost effective because ridership on that corridor is too low.

The Seaview Transit Coalition, a group of more than 1,000 "busless" residents, business owners, and employees, say the lack of midday bus service on Seaview has "created serious hardships," especially for seniors with no cars.

Making operating appropriations for 2007-2009. By a vote of 31 to 17, on April 22, the Senate approved HB 1128. By a vote of 60 to 36, also on April 22, the House approved HB 1128, which would make appropriations to the 2007-09 state operating budget. The operating budget is one of three budgets approved by the Legislature each year. These appropriations pay for general state services such as state employee salaries, basic education, and social services. The bill is now under consideration by the governor.

Ballard light rail study included in bond issue

Studies to determine the feasibility of bringing light rail to West Seattle and Ballard will be included in the "Roads and Transit" plan that will be put to voters in the autumn.

The Sound Transit board of directors accepted the study proposals and made them part of a whole package of transportation projects the agency will ask voters to approve next fall.

McDermott introduces 'right to choose' bill

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision limiting a woman's right to choose, Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott joined as an original co-sponsor in the re-introduction of the Freedom of Choice Act in the House of Representatives.

"As a medical doctor who has witnessed first hand the horrors of what can happen if a woman cannot freely choose a course of action in consultation with a health professional, I am gravely concerned when the Supreme Court votes to insert itself into the room with a doctor and patient," McDermott said.

Domestic dispute stems from clash in Korean and American values

1. Federal Way police responded to a 911 call indicating there had been a domestic disturbance with possible violence at an apartment at 29225 Military Road South. Officers arrived at the scene and determined that the dispute was not violent in nature. One of the involved parties, the son, told Federal Way officers that the argument took place because of a clash between his mother's strong traditional values. Her beliefs, the report stated, were in direct conflict with his Americanized views. Both parties are of Korean decent according to the report.

Burien's hairdresser to the Federal Way star

For weeks, Jill Ochsner has been glued to her television set. The evening of April 18 was no exception.

It was a memorable night as she watched Sanjaya Malakar be voted off of American Idol. Ochsner knows Sanjaya well-especially his famous, thick head of hair.

Sanjaya has graced her hairdresser's chair twice as she helped prepare him for stardom. She has colored and cut his locks.

New Elections director for King County

Sherril Huff has been named the new director of the King County Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division.

Huff, who was twice elected as Kitsap County auditor, has served as King County's assistant director for the division since February 2005

County Executive Ron Sims announced her appointment last week.

The King County Elections Division has been at the center of controversies including timely mailing of absentee (now mail-in) ballots and vote counting since 2003.
