WSHS staff still tied over schedule

The future course schedule at West Seattle High is still uncertain after a staff vote last Friday resulted in a dead heat between a "rolling" block schedule and a straight six.

"The staff is pretty split right now down the middle about which (schedule) to go to," said West Seattle High Principal Bruce Bivins.

Under a rolling block, students would attend six, 55-minute periods Monday and Friday.

Statue meets fund goal

The recast statue, new pedestal and plaza, may be dedicated July Fourth, if all goes well with the design review through Seattle Parks and Recreation.

It has the funds. And then some: $191,250.

On Sunday morning, co-chairs Paul and Libby Carr met with the fiscal sponsor for the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project, and counted more than $16,000 that came in after the deadline with the city.

They meet this week with Lynn Sullivan, the project manager from the Parks Department.

Park designs shown

About 40 people met with architects at The Kenney Retirement Center last week to discuss design of a new park planned for Morgan Junction.

Architects exhibited three different designs for the 0.6-acre park, which will be located next to the intersection of California Avenue and Southwest Eddy Street. Meeting attendees voted for their favorite design ideas to help guide the architects as they refine plans for the new little park.

Each of the proposals included variations of particular elements that people previously told planners they want.

Burien seeks smaller annexation

The Burien City Council has directed its city manager to come up with a recommendation for a smaller potential annexation of North Highline that could pave the way for a compromise with the cities of Seattle, Tukwila and SeaTac.

Both Burien and Seattle have designated all of North Highline as a potential annexation area, while Tukwila and SeaTac have claimed adjacent communities in the unincorporated area for possible annexation.

"There is a desire on the council to resolve this issue and move past it and residents (of North Highline) have been wondering too long about wh

Corrections

The name of the school in the bullying story in the Jan. 16 issue of the West Seattle Herald listed the school's name incorrectly. It is Westside School.

The official voter's pamphlet for a $490 million Seattle School District bond passed last February did not specifically mention it would include combining Denny Middle School and Sealth High onto one campus. That language was included in a brochure created by the district and send to 45,0000 voting households.

This was incorrectly stated in the Jan. 16 issue ("Board ponders plan for Denny/Sealth").

Modifying property tax exemption provisions for veterans of the armed forces._In 2007 HB 1102 passed with full support of the House of Representatives, but did not make it out of the Senate. At the start of the 2008 session the House quickly passed HB 1102, again, to amend tax exemptions for military veterans. A veteran with a combined disposable income of $70,000 per year or less would be exempt from some regular property taxes and all excess property taxes. This bill is now back before the Senate.

Voting Yes were West Seattle Reps.

Housing Authority considers relaxing felony conviction limits

The Seattle Housing Authority is proposing to relax its criminal background criteria for certain felony convictions to shorten the waiting time for people in need of housing.

The waiting periods for crimes like burglary and homicide, which currently carries a 20-year lapse between release from jail and eligibility, would move to a 12-month system under the proposal.

'On The Razzle' opens at Ballard High on Jan. 24

Two students at Ballard High will go on an adventure around Vienna and it's all make believe as the school's drama department presents "On The Razzle," a play written by Tom Stoppard during a three night run staring on Jan. 24.

"It's a lot of fun. It has been one of the most tight productions I've done at Ballard. It's fast paced and the language is very adult.

Semper Fidelis

This is a love story that began on Leary Way in 1999. Although their lives together ended on Jan. 16, the romance of Bob and Charlotte will never end. They met at Fleury's Ballard Tire Co. and parted by a hospital bed at Swedish First Hill. As Charlotte Gaddis puts it, "the time that we had was so short, but it was perfect."

Last June I wrote about a man who suffered a massive stroke while his wife was out of town, but was found alive in his apartment thanks to the neighbor and the Comcast man.
