SeaTac City Council members acted March 25 to close a possible loophole in the city's park 'n fly regulations.

To provide a little economic incentive, SeaTac had allowed one bonus off-street parking space for every 25 square feet of retail/commercial, residential or service space required by the building code.

The bonus parking spaces were usually used for park 'n fly operations for Sea-Tac International Airport travelers.

But city officials discovered that, under the formula, a typical 250-room hotel with 87,000 square feet would qualify for 3,500 bonus parkin

Upgraded policies on sex and AIDS education were adopted by the Highline School District on March 26.

The policies emphasize teaching that condoms and other means of protection are important for sexually active youth.

Water District 49 in Burien has launched a project to replace the "storts" on local fire hydrants.

A stort is a time-saving device that is permanently attached to a fire hydrant so firefighters don't have to hook up an adaptor before connecting a fire hose.

The project, which got underway in October, will continue over the next several years to upgrade hydrants throughout the water district that are identified by the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department (Fire District 2).

Public's help asked to find gun-wielding shop robber

March 7 - The King County Sheriff's Office is asking for help from the public to catch a man who robbed a Burien tobacco shop while armed with a handgun.

The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. at the Burien Tobacco Mart, 14400 Ambaum Blvd. S.W.

According to sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart, the suspect entered the business and went to the beer and wine cooler before going up to the counter.

He then pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the cash register.

The Mount Rainier Rams sit atop the heap in boys soccer for the Seamount League after the first-half of the season was nearly completed with a 3-0 win over their Kennedy Lancer rivals Thursday at Starfire in Tukwila.

JoAn Cox, the mother of slain King County Deputy Sheriff Steve Cox, was honored as the Burien citizen community activist of the year at the city's 15th birthday celebration and awards ceremony March 28.

Mick Purdy and Adrian Kelly, owners of Mick Kelly's Irish Pub, were named Burien business leaders of the year.

Victoria Hall received the educational leader award, and Larry Moormeier was named the environmental leader.

Jim Hughes, owner of Sal's Deli, received The Robby, which is presented by Robinson Newspapers, publisher of the Times/News.

Bikers belong to the same club

"Hey man, is that your bike out there?" I wasn't sure whether I could reasonably deny the fact since I was the only person in the room who was wearing the signature spandex, jersey and day-glow green riding vest.

This meeting of cultures took place at Alki Bakery, home of the West Seattle Chapter of the Center of the Known Universe. This is where many bicyclists go to contemplate the state of the world over coffee and baked goods. It's also a great place to meet and talk with bikers from around the region.
