Student at Highline College honored for his academics

Highline Community College student Steve Simpkins from Des Moines has been named a member of the 2008 All-Washington Academic Team for his scholastic achievement and community service.

The honor comes with a $250 scholarship from KeyBank, a $500 scholarship from the Northwest Education Loan Association and a $250 scholarship from the Highline Foundation, giving him more than one quarter's worth of tuition.

Nominations for top Highline College alum sought

Highline Community College is requesting nominations for its 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

This year's award again will go to the former Highline student who is making outstanding contributions in his or her chosen field of endeavor.

Nominees should be former Highline students who attended the college prior to the 2003-2004 academic year and have made significant contributions through community service, noteworthy professional achievement and/or recognized leadership.

I am reminded of an advertisement that I saw many years ago comparing a Cadillac Cimarron to a BMW favorably.

The Cadillac was a Chevrolet with better carpets to put it politely, but Cadillac wanted you to believe that it was a car of equal value to the BMW.

This is a real "spin" to any who have even a basic understanding of automobiles.

In the past 40 years school districts throughout the nation have added to their costs by hiring "Public Relations" (spin) employees.

In this district these are pretty expensive.
