Psychics see good things for Ballard

In years past, those suffering from a lonely-heart or physical illness may have consulted a psychic for a peak into their future for a hopeful sign. The psychic in turn consulted a large crystal ball, a numerology chart, a deck of tarot cards, and personal intuition in hopes of finding that sign. But it's 2009, and everything has changed, even in the mysterious world of the occult.

According to three area professionals claiming psychic ability or fine-tuned intuition who offer private "readings," the universal question, "Will I ever find Mr.

21st Century Viking: Some streetcar suggestions

There was an article recently in the Dec. 17 Ballard News-Tribune (http://ballardnewstribune.com/articles/2008/12/19/news/local_news/news04.txt, "Streetcar could expand to Ballard, eventually" By Michael Harthorne) about how there are plans to have a streetcar come to Ballard via Fremont and Leary Way. While the plans seem to indicate that the line will probably go to downtown Ballard, I was wondering why hasn't anyone suggested having it run up 8th Avenue Northwest?

If you go over to 8th and take a look around, you might notice that it is pretty wide in the middle. In the legendary days of streetcar lines criss-crossing Seattle, Route 19 went up 8th to 65th.

The chains on the bus go...

My head aches. My feet are frozen. And I missed a half-day's work. To take my mind off my troubles, I try to think how best to describe the sound of the tire chains as they slap between the wheel-wells of the bus and the icy roadway. Is it a Twaap-Twaap-Twaap, or a Clang-Splat-Clang? Whatever it is, the never-ending sound is boring its way into my brain.

I started my day by waiting on California Avenue for a route 55 bus that never came. So I marched south to the Junction, the crisp crunching of my feet on the frozen ground breaking the silence of a snow-bound morning.

A Garden for All: It's showtime!

My eyes were glued to the snow and ice. I was watching my steps with my head down when I saw it.

It was a brown oak leaf lying there on top of the snow. I looked up to see a young oak tree that still had its leaves, and it dawned on me that I haven't looked up in awhile. I realized I was missing something.

With all the snow, ice and rain we've had over the last couple of weeks, you probably didn't notice it either. It's showtime for the conifers, baby, and it's called the Evergreen State for good reason.

My love of coniferous trees developed gradually.

An open letter to West Seattle residents

To the editor:

Having moved here from Northern New Jersey a few years ago, there are many things I am happy to leave behind. That includes aggressive driving, air pollution and poor bus service (yes, far worse than here.) There are a few things I want to bring with me like good pizza and efficient snow and ice clearing. The recent December snowstorms left my spouse and me virtually housebound for a week - and that was not necessary.

Skateboard viable option

I have been skateboarding since childhood. I have no car or bicycle and I use my skateboard as transportation. Skateboarders should not be cutting across traffic in the middle of the road; that is as dangerous as a bicyclist who suddenly cuts across the road. The bike lane pavement is ideal for skateboarding. Our transportation deserves equal rights. A helmet law would be fine, as long as I can skateboard to work!

Santa's elves

"pay it forward"

On Monday the 22nd, after spending two frozen hours at a bus stop on First Avenue, a kind Samaritan stopped to ask if anyone needed a ride to West Seattle. My husband Mike gladly accepted the offer. It turned out that the Samaritan had been the recipient of a similar gift the previous Friday and wanted to return the favor.

This person had been rescued by a Vashon Islander that frozen Friday and amazingly the person they rescued on that wintry Monday was another Islander!

Once Last Rhyme

This year from Santa, did you get

What you wished for, or feel regret

For reaching in your stocking's sole

You found a great big lump of coal

And did you have a merry feast

Complete with wine and roasted beast

Or dine along with all your pride

On Big Macs or Kentucky Fried

Was all your loving family there

With bounty rich enough to share

"We resolve" 2009 : West Seattleites make promises to themselves

Cindi Barker Resident of the Morgan Junction

What I would like see happen in West Seattle in 2009 is that we continue to build up community involvement. There are so many talented, skilled and knowledgeable people who live here, and we can do so much for and in the neighborhoods when people get involved in their local community organizations. Youth oriented, lending a helping hand, civic affairs, all of them do important things for the benefit of everyone.
