Residents not toasting runway

Highline political leaders have joined residents under the new third runway's flight path in expressing outrage at its apparent heavy use.

Des Moines Mayor and former Airport Communities Coalition chairman Bob Sheckler said during his ten years with the ACC, "we were assured over and over and over again it would only be used in adverse weather and never as the primary runway.

"I feel the ACC membership has been duped," Sheckler added. "We are not going to sit idly by and allow this to happen."

A special meeting of the Highline Forum will be held Dec.

Titans head coach Brett Lucas, in his sixth season, progressively moved the Titans from a couple losing seasons his first two years to top three in league success the past couple seasons, wasn’t hoping to necessarily bea

Is education in a recession, depression, or just bankrupt?

The news today is full of reports on the "recession" in economical terms that has brought on many adverse situations for governments and individuals in the United States, and now, in the entire world.

Individuals, many having "401-K's" and other similar investments, are not feeling good about their future.

Since this nation has become a "consumer nation" instead of being a "producer nation" as it was in the past, the "consumer" has decided to "not consume" at that rate that used to drive an ever-increasing economy.

Discretionary purchases, often made on credit,

21st Century Viking: Walking down Ballard Avenue

One of the things that you always hear about Ballard is how Ballard Avenue has quickly been transformed from a street full of industrial, working-class businesses to one full of upscale boutiques and bars. From my observations, I had always thought this was somewhat misleading so I decided to walk the entire length of Ballard Avenue in one go.

I decided to do this when I realized that I had spent plenty of time on certain parts of Ballard Avenue but I had never actually walked the entire length and taken it all in at once. It was a very interesting experience that really reflects the diversity of our neighborhood.

Ballard Avenue has always been identified with Ballard itself, as it was the main drag when it was a separate city from Seattle and the same holds true today.

There are many people who live in other neighborhoods whose only experience of Ballard is walking down a small, several block section of Ballard Avenue from Northwest Market Street to about 20th Avenue Northwest.

Compass Center will build low income housing for singles

In late February the Compass Center, with the help of loans from United Way of King County and the city of Seattle, purchased the property at 1753 N.W. 56th St. from the Low Income Housing Institute with the intent of constructing low-income housing for single adults.

Rick Friedhoff, executive director of the Compass Center, said the project is in the early stages of development but it will most likely be a six-story, 50,000-square-feet building housing 60 to 75 residents.

NEW Panelists try to prepare parents for kindergarten

How can you best be an advocate for your child when it comes to kindergarten readiness? Should you push them ahead or stay in preschool another year?

How do you choose the right school?

These were a few of the concerns that north Seattle parents had last week at Faith Lutheran Church where a panel of experts shared their thoughts and answered questions on kindergarten readiness.

Henrik Ivarsson, a Ballard dad, is concerned about his 5 year old son starting kindergarten in the fall.

"It takes a long time for him to feel safe...
