New pastoral center at Our Lady of Guadalupe opens

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish will host an open house for the West Seattle community on Sunday, May 17 from 9:30 a.m to 1 p.m. The completion of this new building marks an important milestone in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish’s history and is the first project funded by the Parish Capital Campaign, completed in 2007, said church members in a press release issued May 8.

“We are excited about this remarkable new gathering space, and office space, for our community,” said Pastor Fr. Jack Walmesley. “Our open house is an opportunity for members of the West Seattle community to visit our first new facility in decades. This center is the first step in our building plans for the parish, and makes a powerful statement about our bright future.”

The Pastoral Center houses 6,800 square feet of handicap accessible meeting rooms, offices, and storage. The first floor has three meetings rooms and offices for full and part-time staff.

On the lower level, there is a larger meeting room for religious education classes, and other prayer and spirituality groups. Visitors at the open house can take a self-guided tour, and light refreshments will be served.

This symposium will create an opportunity for our district families to receive extensive training in our support, intervention and prevention strategies and provide a clearer sense of their roles in supporting their children’s academic success.”

VIDEO: Local girl works to free zoo's elephants

While the Woodland Park Zoo’s new, popular penguin population pleases, the zoo’s 800-pound gorilla, so to speak, may be its three elephants. Protest groups have been organizing to have Watoto, Bamboo and Chai removed and taken to an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee to give them more space and sanity, according to protestors.

As the Ballard News-Tribune reported April 27, a press conference was held that morning with actor/comedian Lily Tomlin and included Alyene Fortnang, co-founder of Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants, who want the three zoo elephants liberated from captivity.

Now, an ambitious 15 year old from Greenwood, Maia Sebek, is taking the bull by the horns, or, in this case, the elephant by the trunk, and has created The Elephant Project. Coached by her mother, Mary, and helped by her younger sister, Katie, she, like Tomlin and Fortnang, is putting pressure on the zoo to free the elephants.

They are collecting signatures and appearing at the Ballard Farmers Market and other public venues to get their message out.

Mayor releases Pedestrian Master Plan, asks for input

Mayor Greg Nickels today announced the release of the city’s draft Pedestrian Master Plan, the first citywide action plan aimed at making walking safer and easier in Seattle.

Launched by the mayor’s 2005 Pedestrian Safety Initiative, the Pedestrian Master Plan provides the city with a comprehensive strategy for making Seattle the most walkable city in the nation.

In the next six years, the city will invest $60 million to support pedestrian improvements through the 2006 Bridging the Gap levy. The Pedestrian Master Plan systematically examines the needs of walkers across the city and helps identify and prioritize projects in areas with the greatest need, according to a press release from the mayor's office.

Improvements include: new sidewalks, sidewalk repairs, safe routes to school, pedestrian countdown signals, crosswalks, pedestrian signage, and stairway rehabilitation.
