Experts urge West Seattle families to communicate directly about drugs and alcohol

A consensus seemed to be reached by parents of West Seattle teens, and drug and alcohol experts, that to “Just Say No” does not accomplish tangible results to keep kids from the temptation of abusing nor promote meaningful communication between parent and child.

Hope Lutheran Church partnered with Renae Gaines and the Southwest Healthy Youth Partnership to sponsor a town hall meeting to address the subject of underage drinking and drug and tobacco use on April 28 at Seattle Lutheran High School.

The evening program was called “A Time for the Community to Conversate: A Community Forum.” The purpose was to bring the community together to provide tools to address underage drinking and youth marijuana use in the West Seattle community. A panel expressed the importance of adults and the community to send a consistent message to young people that alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drug use is unhealthy, illegal, and can negatively impact their future.

SLIDESHOW: Adams celebrates new rain garden

The water coursing through Adams Elementary School's new rain garden may have been hose-supplied, but that didn't damped enthusiasm during the debut of the new runoff control system April 30.

The rain garden for the school at 6110 28th Ave. N.W. will help mitigate storm water and combines education and environmentalism, said David Minnery, who developed the conceptual design for the rain garden as a graduate student in landscape architecture.

The Adams rain garden takes rainwater from the school's two roofs and directs it into a cistern. From the cistern, the water travels down a concrete channel before being released into a garden that will absorb the water and remove pollutants.

As rain was conspicuously absent, water was fed into the cistern through a hose for the official debut of the rain garden. As the water coursed down the channel, Adams students crowded together to splash in the water and watch as it cascaded into the garden.

Minnery said it felt nice to see the students react when the water was turned on, as he always intended the rain garden to be interactive and a space for play.

Authorities responding to oil spill south of Des Moines

The state Department of Ecology, U.S. Coast Guard and South King Fire & Rescue are responding to a diesel fuel spill leaking into a small creek at Dash Point State Park that empties to south Puget Sound.

The site is just south of Des Moines in Federal Way.

The 300-gallon, privately-owned tank is used to fill construction and other work equipment. A worker with Long Painting noticed nothing unusual when he went into a trailer at the equipment site about 7:45 p.m. Thursday. When he left the trailer about 8:35 p.m., diesel fuel was flowing across a parking lot, into a grassy area, soaking into the ground and going into a creek about 700 feet from where it enters Puget Sound.

The spill was reported to the state Department of Ecology about 10 p.m. The cause and volume of the spill are under investigation, but initial reports indicate an equipment failure on the tank. It had been filled recently, and the spill emptied the tank.

Maritime Academy students take a dive

Ballard High School's Maritime Academy students spent the morning of April 30 sending underwater vehicles to the bottom of the Ballard Pool to see which team could collect the most rings. And, as is usually the case in life, Chuck Norris came out on top.

Juniors David Mershon and Andrew Colbrook sent their Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), named Chuck Norris after the hard-hitting, impeccably bearded star of "Walker, Texas Ranger" and "The Octagon," into the pool first and ran away with the competition despite their unconventional T-shaped design.

Colbrook said they wanted the simplest design possible because sometimes simple is a good thing.

All the other teams were building box or house-shaped ROVs, Mershon said.

John Foster, teacher at Ballard's Maritime Academy, has been having his students build and compete ROVs for the past five or six years to teach them about wiring, electricity and buoyancy.

In addition, students learn to design, test and redesign to achieve a particular goal, picking up rings, in this case, Foster said.
