Halloween at Westwood Village

One of the newest businesses at Westwood Village, Chiropractor Dr. Lisa K. Grasman was out on the corner beneath her office (it's on the top floor) across from Bed, Bath and Beyond handing out candy on Halloween.

"It was a busy early," she said, "but I'm handing out Dum-Dums and now I have too much candy!"

That didn't last long as more kids approached.

The shopping center sponsored the event and merchants were given the option to participate.

Dr. Grasman, who has only been open four months will have her grand opening in November.

3A season comes to a close for Gators

Maybe next year.

Decatur's first football season in the Class 3A South Puget Sound League ended with a 14-6 loss to Auburn-Mountainview on Thursday, Oct. 28, putting the Gators' final league record at 0-5 and their overall mark at 1-8.

But the next time around the 3A circuit in 2011 could be different, as indicated by their regular season finale against Auburn-Mountainview.

Decatur came back enough to have a chance to catch the Lions in the end, but two fourth quarter plays in particular helped to stave off the surging Gators.

The first occurred as the time remaining clock slipped past the 10 minute mark. Decatur's Yohiness Jennings gained 10 yards on a left end run but was stopped from getting the two more yards he needed to get a first down out of the fourth down play.

The Gators then got a break of their own as Auburn-Mountainview fumbled the ball away with 5:51 left.
Decatur took over on the Lions' 47, then found the end zone from 45 yards out on the third play from scrimmage.

You Are What You Eat: Fall back with crisp veggies

Cruciferous veggies – Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, bok choy and horseradish, to name a few. Not everyone’s favorite, these veggies often get overlooked.

But now is the time to try them, as the cold weather brings out the best in these veggies. Brussels sprouts, for example, are always sweeter after they are touched by the first frost.

Cruciferous means cross-like, and it refers to the way the leaves come out of the stem of these plants. These vegetables are well known for their cancer-preventing attributes, and they are good sources of vitamin C and fiber.

Now that fall is here, try some of these great veggies in new ways. As always, these recipes are heart-healthy and low in sodium.

Red Cabbage with Apples

  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons salad oil
  • 1/ cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey
  • 1 green apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 small head of red cabbage, shredded

Seattle Housing Authority working on soil remediation on 35th

Environmental engineering crews are working on a soil remediation project at the corner of 35th Ave. s.w. and Graham Street, specifically at 6058 35th Avenue s.w. on the site of a former service station.

The project was awarded to a local firm by the Seattle Housing Authority, owners of the land.

The work being done consists of the excavation of petroleum contaminated soil to an approximate depth of 30 feet below ground surface. Clean overburden soil will be segregated and stockpiled on site. The excavation will be stabilized using an engineered shoring wall on the western and southern property boundaries to support the City of Seattle Right-of-Way and associated infrastructure.

Petroleum contaminated soil will be hauled off site and disposed of at an appropriate contaminated soil disposal facility.

The project cost is estimated between $600,000 and $675,000.

The work is expected to take approximately six weeks.

FCA member concerned about potential of CSO project construction in Lincoln Park

West Seattle resident Martha Callard, who lives near Roxbury Street 2 blocks south of Wildwood is a member of the Fauntleroy Community Association who is very concerned about the potential of locating a Combined Sewage Overflow project in the south parking lot at Lincoln Park. She shared her concerns with the West Seattle Herald and is urging all area neighbors to attend the meeting on the matter, set for November 1.

Callard writes, "As you are aware, the folks at Murray Basin Citizens Advisory Group have suggested that the south parking lot at Lincoln Park would be a suitable alternate location for the necessary 1.25 million gallon sewage overflow storage tank.

Besides losing the 68 (+3 handicapped) parking spaces in that lot for about 3 years, a second major construction disruption along Fauntleroy Way with heavy trucks, equipment, etc. would have an adverse effect on the neighborhood which already is overburdened with overflow parking from the park, particularly during large gatherings such as swim meets or sporting and corporate events.
