Earth Service Corp launching food composting program at West Seattle High School

The YMCA Earth Service Corps has been getting West Seattle High School students and staff ready for a "Compost Test Drive", to be held on Tuesday, April 5.

Cedar Grove Composting will be partnering as they get their program up and running.

Cedar Grove is delivering a trial compost dumpster on Monday, April 4.

The effort is looking for donations of five gallon buckets to be used for food scraps and napkins in classrooms, in offices, and in their staff lounge.

They plan to use the buckets as liquids buckets, and they are encouraging better recycling of milk cartons and cans at West Seattle High. Students will be able to earn community service hours by helping out at lunch times, before and after school.

Spokesperson Jennifer Hall said, "We are a little apprehensive; food composting at WSHS is going to be a big undertaking. But we are also excited, and feel that food composting is the right thing to do for our school environment, for our community, and for our future."

Car Counselor: The Auto Industry - Part 2 – Where We Are

This is the second in a three part series. I hope you enjoy it.

As the end of the 20th century neared, the automotive industry was in a period of rapid change. In 1996, and new standard for diagnostic information was enacted and called OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics). This ensured that certain information from the vehicle's computer system was universal and able to be accessed by anyone with the proper tool. A single connector is now used on all vehicles sold in the US, whereas before 1996 every manufacturer had it's own individual connector and made it increasingly difficult for the independent repair shop to stay up to date.

Seattle rocker Duff McKagan releases new video by West Seattle filmmaker Jamie Chamberlin

West Seattle band member Jeff Rouse, and supermodel, designer Susan Holmes, appear in video

Life continues to rock and roll for West Seattle filmmaker Jamie Chamberlin with today's release of his video of Seattle legend Duff McKagan's song Dead Skin, the first release from the album The Taking with his band, Loaded. Other band members include guitarist Mike Squires, drummer Isaac Carpenter, and bass player and West Seattle resident Jeff Rouse.

Chamberlin followed those cool cats, ZZ Top around Europe during their tour in 2008 with his cameras for his documentary Double Down Live which appears in ZZ Top's double DVD offering of the same name released a year ago November. He has currently been filming Loaded around West Seattle and in L.A. for a new project, a sort of Hard Day's Night look at the band's life, punctuated by all 10 songs from The Taking, and a fictional story line. The film's title is not yet decided.

UPDATE: Mayor and Councilmember O'Brien cry foul on lawsuit against signature gatherers; Gov. backs it

While Gov. Gregoire takes City Attorney Pete Holmes' side, saying that Washington is planning to join efforts to block the city of Seattle from holding a referendum on replacing the elevated Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel, the mayor and council member Mike O'Brien have a different take:

Mayor's Press Release:

Mayor’s statement

“State law says Seattle will pay for all cost overruns on the deep-bored tunnel. Before putting the public on the hook for cost overruns, we should first ask their permission. That’s why I support a public vote.”

Press Release, City Councilmember Mike O'Brien's office:

Today Councilmember Mike O'Brien released the following statement in response to City Attorney Pete Holmes's lawsuit that could deny the people of Seattle the right to vote on the deep bored tunnel project:

"This morning leaders from Washington State, King County, the Port of Seattle, and the City of Seattle told the public they want to move forward with the deep bored tunnel project, but they still plan to make Seattle pay for cost overruns. Meanwhile, only 35 percent of Seattle voters even want the deep bore tunnel.
