Flash mob of flashy dancers surprises Alki

A flash mob of about 15 dancers performing four choreographed routines seemed to appear out of nowhere Saturday, April 30 at about 5:00 p.m. between the Alki Bathhouse and Liberty Statue. The excitement was the brainchild of birthday girl, Stephanie Gaebel of Green Lake, who turned 25. She found other dancers on Facebook, in addition to having friends join her.

The group held three "rehearsals" in Green Lake and also performed at Pike Place Market before landing on Alki.

"I just wanted to have a dance party for my birthday in one of the best places of Seattle," said Gaebel cheerfully. "I choreographed four dances with my partner, Karen Klebs. I moved up here to dance with ARC Dance Company. Tonight we'll celebrate on Alki, go to the Cactus (Restaurant) and then have a bon fire."

Paul Wheeler was the D.J. "I thought it was fun. They did a good job."

Meanders Restaurant plans to meander next door

As the West Seattle Herald first reported, the former Jade Restaurant became Meanders, a breakfast diner operated by Miranda Krone, at 6023 California Ave. SW:

http://www.westseattleherald.com/2010/12/24/news/former-jade-west-resta…-

Last month Krone discussed her intention to expand into the space to her south with the West Seattle Herald but zoning was still up in the air. Now she wants the community to know her plans are approaching reality.

"We have an appointment June 16 with Development and Planning June 16 to try to get the permits to expand next door," she said as she was cooking both artfully and frantically for a full house of customers with more standing by the door waiting for a seat.

"It's only 400 and something square feet, adding about 20 seats," she said of the new space. "I want to make it look like a dining room. To deal with the extra work I'm going to have someone on toast, man, just dealing with the toaster," she said half-jokingly.

Varsity Soccer: Tyee vs. Foster ends in 1-1 draw

The Tyee Totems met the Foster Bulldogs in boy’s high school soccer on Friday night, April 29 at Highline Stadium and battled to a 1-1 draw.

First Half
The first 39 minutes of the first half were scoreless, but not without chances for both sides. Tyee had five shots (two on target) while Foster had six (three on target) with both goalkeepers playing well and getting a hand to those on frame.

Foster nearly put one in with 15 minutes left in the half when Meron Falu sprinted onto a through ball and managed a chip shot over Tyee’s keeper who came off his line. Tyee’s defense kept with the play and cleared the goal-bound looping shoot off the line, saving the chance.

Tyee’s recent goal machine Zaki Mahamud (Coach John Yellam said he has scored four goals in the last four games and just recently moved up to varsity from JV) sat out the first 20 minutes of the first half with a nagging leg injury. Upon entering the game his physical presence was immediately felt by Foster’s backline who started focusing attention on the forward.

Many core members and volunteers helped to engage the audience and attendees and helped to make the smooth flow of the event possible."

Included in the program were traditional dances, lots of music and a banana eating contest.

The festival is the work of the Cambodian Cultural Alliance of Washington (CCAW), a locally founded and locally based organization in White Center.

Des Moines' Rosie suit finally finds a home in Snohomish County court

The civil complaint filed against two Des Moines police officers who shot and killed Rosie, a Newfoundland dog, in November has finally found a court to hear it.
Snohomish County District Court has agreed to hear the civil complaint against Des Moines police officers Michael Graddon and Sgt. Steve Weiland.
The complaint charges Graddon and Weiland with allegedly committing animal cruelty in the second degree and trapping and wounding an animal. Both complaints are misdemeanors.
In November, Graddon and Weiland responded to a wandering dog call on 16 Avenue South and South 272nd St. in Des Moines. After attempts to identify and capture the dog failed, including tasing her twice, Weiland gave Graddon permission to use lethal force on the animal.
Des Moines Master Animal Control Officer Jan Magnuson has announced Des Moines police will conduct emphasis patrols for leash-law violations in city parks as well as the downtown and Redondo marinas this spring and summer.

People arrived long before the store was open, some as early as 5:30 am to be first in line for the best plants at McLendon's Hardware 85th annual Anniversary Sunrise Plant Sale in White Center. For the last 25 years the store has also featured a FREE pancake and sausage breakfast with coffee and juice.

Christine Kincaid was there, first in line for breakfast, having already gotten her pick of the plants. "I live in Des Moines but I like the folks at the McLendon's store so I always come over here."

Paul Jung from West Seattle was in line early too and has been coming by for the last seven years. Katie O'Connell from SeaTac was there with her Mother-in-Law Kay Bonus who said," I always miss this but this year I made it!"

The highlight of the sale every year are the phenomenal fuschias which this year cost $18.99 but everyone gets a FREE tomato plant with any purchase.

Mary Ann Bredl was in charge of the event for the entire McLendon's chain and said, "Our goal is 1300 breakfasts for White Center and 8000 across all the stores."
