Love and theft leads to bakery murder

Dispute over a stolen necklace and love triangle leads to fatal, execution-style shooting at White Center bakery

Prosecutors charged 25-year-old Cu Van Troung with first degree murder on Dec. 30, alleging he went to the Seattle Roll Bakery in White Center on Dec. 28 with premeditated intent to shoot and kill victim Jason Saechao, 24.

The following account is a summary of probable cause documents from King County Sheriff’s Office Detective Robin Cleary:

At first, a fabricated tale of robbery
The call came out just after midnight on Dec. 28 that someone had been shot at the Seattle Roll Bakery on 16th Ave S.W. in White Center and deputies rushed to the scene where they found Saechao shot dead. Four witnesses were inside the bakery when the shooting occurred, although only two remained when deputies arrived.
A male employee of the bakery and female acquaintance of both the victim and Troung (the alleged shooter) remained and initially told deputies an unknown male came in demanding money. When Saechao tried to defend the employee, they said, the robber pulled out a gun and shot him.

“Bear the Sway” explores history and imagery

Historical inequity is placed in a contemporary visual language

press release:
Bear the Sway is the new body of work by the artist and educator Lauren Francis Adams. The piece relates to the artist’s recent investigations into the “Lost Colony” and Elizabethan colonialism. This series of paintings and drawings on paper is inspired by John White’s 1580s watercolors of native Algonquins and Secotans, and formal portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and the explorers who formed her colonial advisor ship. The basic tenet of Adam’s project is to resolve an understanding of the historical situations at work, and to interrogate the narratives and images searching for a clearer display of the colonial power dynamic. Bear the Sway explores the history of imagery as a site for political displays of power and to transform given history into a new narrative. Adams explains that her work is inspired by topical issues, especially relating to agriculture, labor and the American military, colonialism and capitalism. She does extensive research into historical decorative forms from diverse fields with a goal to disarm the viewer, revealing unexpected associations and conclusions.

Girls Basketball SLIDESHOW: Chief Sealth tops Foster in a close one, 64-58

By Kyle Howard, Photos by Kurt Howard

The Foster Bulldogs girls visited the Chief Sealth Seahawks in a non-division game Thursday night. Experience and offensive execution helped the Seahawks to their fifth straight win in a row, beating the Bulldogs 64-58.

Foster didn’t make it easy for Chief Sealth; their defense played well by creating over 20 Seahawk turnovers. Foster was also able to get plenty of second chance opportunities to score with great offensive rebounding, but weren’t very successful scoring on their second chances. Having a few days off for the break and injuries played a role for the Bulldogs as well. Head coach Datri Elliott said after the game “I wish we could execute better on second chance shots, we couldn’t make our layups and get back quick enough, those are some of the things we need to work on.” She was pleased with her defense saying, “I’m not too worried about our defense, were pretty strong. I just wish we could turn the turnovers we force into points.”

By Kyle Howard, Photos by Kurt Howard

The Shorecrest Scots visited the Kennedy Catholic Lancers for a matchup in the Les Schwab Christmas Classic Tournament, Wednesday night at Kennedy High School.

Shorecrest came out strong in the first quarter taking the lead and maintaining it through the first five minutes. Kennedy Catholic chipped away at the lead and got within three with a layup at the buzzer from Lancer senior Mitch Penner making it 18-15.

The Lancers took over from then on when Sam Braxton knocked down a three pointer to tie the game at 18, and with a layup from Cole Madison on the next play Kennedy Catholic took the lead and never looked back. The Lancers did a great job controlling the ball and the tempo of the game, playing some great defense and scoring on good high percentage shots. Shorecrest hung in the game but were unable to gain much ground after Kennedy Catholic opened up a 10 point lead in the third quarter; every basket scored by Shorecrest was matched by Kennedy Catholic. The Lancers went on to win 67-55.
