Leticia Clausen chosen as 2012 Philip P. Swain Excellence in Education Award

Principal of Denny International Middle School Jeff Clark shared via letter the announcement that Denny teacher Leticia Clausen has been selected as the winner of the 2012 Phillip P. Swain Excellence in Education Award. The Philip B. Swain Student Scholarship, funded by family and friends through an endowment, honors Philip Swain, a passionate and lifelong advocate for public education. He devoted 20 years of public service to these efforts, including 14 years as a member of the Seattle School Board (1961-1975). On the School Board, he provided valuable leadership and guidance to the district. It is the wish of his family and friends that an award be made each year, subject to availability of endowment earnings, in the amount of $1,000 to a graduating senior in Seattle Public Schools.

One $1,000 scholarship is awarded per year and is renewable for three additional years upon maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a one-half time class load.

Principal Clarks letter:

It is a great pleasure to announce that Ms. Leticia Clausen is a winner of the 2012 Philip P. Swain Excellence in Education Award!

Ballet School’s “Snow White” Ideal for Children

Three generations of my family attended Pacific Northwest Ballet School’s performance
of “Snow White” opening day – my daughter, granddaughter and myself. My three-year-
old granddaughter, Kita, seemed mesmerized and never took her eyes off the dancers.

If you have a budding ballerina or want to introduce your child to dance, “Snow White”
gives you the perfect chance. Everything about this production is kid-friendly. In the
lobby you can pick up a booster seat, which is a cushion that rests on the seat and
elevates the child to a position where they can see the stage easily.

The costumes are bright and colorful from the apricot tutus of the butterflies to the
differently-colored tights each of the Seven Dwarfs wears. Snow White is easily
recognizable because her white skirt sparkles and the evil Queen is draped in black to
emphasize her evilness.

I wondered if Kita might get restless if there was only dancing. Then a few minutes into
the ballet, a narrator began explaining the story. Kita barely moved, and she’s normally
quite squirmy.

As you’ll recall, the story centers around the evil Queen, Snow White’s stepmother,

Seamount All-Stars overpower the Nisqually All-Stars, 121-76

Auburn High School was the place to be last week to watch high school basketball at its showboating best. In the first of four games the Nisqually All-Stars faced the Seamount All-Stars in the South Sound All-Star Basketball Classic.

So what is the definition of All-Star? The word All-Star is an adjective, consisting of athletes chosen as the best at their positions from all teams in a league or region. Well that pretty much sums it up.

The Seamount All-Stars beat the Nisqually All-Stars by a score of 121-76. You might ask yourself why such a high score. To start with the game was played with 10 minute quarters not eight, which gave them an extra eight minutes to score. Next, and this is most important, the game was played with All-Stars! They are the best of the best in their league. These players can score by driving to the hole, shooting a mid-range shot or hitting a three. It’s what they do and they all do it very well.

Seattle Police issue newsletter on burglary and robbery trends/prevention

Dear Community Friends,

Residential Burglary Trend
In a previous newsletter, we told you about the trend of young women increasingly being involved in burglary, either as the lookout, or as the person who knocks on the door to see if anyone answers, and then signaling to the rest of the burglary crew whether or not it’s “safe” to continue with the burglary.

We’ve also noticed repeat burglaries at the same address. We’ve noted cases where a home has been burglarized and some time later the same home is burglarized again. This could be because of burglars waiting for the homeowners to replace the items that were stolen and then going back to steal those items as well, or the burglar came back to get items not taken during the first burglary. Regardless, burglars found what they considered an easy target, and unless the residents take steps to make their home more secure, that home will continue to be an easy target.

What You As Residents Can Do
To combat the repeats burglary trend, our primary recommendation is to take the steps necessary to enhance your home security.
