Letter--Burien does have tree ordinance that would apply to North Highline

In a final touch of levity, I would like to discuss the most recent articles about how the Burien City Manager went to the North Highline Unicorporated Council and told them once again that Burien has no tree pruning or cutting permits.

The White Center Now Blog quotes him as saying," Asked about claims that annexation would bring more bureaucracy to simple acts like cutting a tree at a person’s own home, another point annexation opponents have cited, Martin declared it “consummate b******t.”

Perhaps the City Manager is unaware that there is a tree pruning and cutting permit process in his city and so he claims it will not add another level of bureaucracy to the lives of the citizens in Area Y.

So here are some parts from that tree removal/pruning permit that Mike Martin/Burien City Manager claims doesn't exist. Enjoy reading this.

Just this permit process is a reason for voting against joining Burien. By the way, there is a permit fee for pruning and cutting the tree under this process.

West Seattle man arrested for hate crime in baseball bat attack

A 34-year-old West Seattle man is charged with malicious harassment (Washington State’s hate crime statute) and third degree assault for allegedly attacking another man with a baseball bat while yelling homophobic slurs on Oct. 26.

The charges were first reported by SeattlePI on Nov. 4.

According to charging documents released in the case, the victim stepped off a Metro bus shortly after 2 p.m. near S.W. Bradford St. and S.W. Avalon Way and Ryan Joshua Cox allegedly struck him four times across the back with a wooden baseball bat while calling him a “homosexual” and “sodomist.”

The victim reported the attack to the bus driver, who called 911 while the suspect left the scene. The victim told police he believed he was targeted and hit because of his sexual orientation.

What do you think of the port-a-potty at the Ballard Commons Park?

In June, a portable toilet, or a "Honey Bucket," was placed at the Ballard Commons Park. And now, as we head into the winter season, the City of Seattle Department of Human Services wants to know what you think about it.

A two week comment period, from Nov. 2 to Nov. 16, will be open for people to comment on the Honey Bucket. To make things easier, they created a survey for you to take on SurveyMonkey, which can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HGVD39Y

Some community residents have expressed concerns over the Honey Bucket, saying that it attracted homeless people and encouraged them to camp over night. Others were concerned about drug use and public drinking. To date, there is no data or solid evidence that the bathroom has increased activity or "residency" from people who are homeless.

At the Ballard Community Taskforce on Homelessness and Hunger, the subject of the Honey Bucket was brought up. Taskforce Chair Graham Pruss said that the City was deciding whether to keep it keep it year-round or to only have it during summer months.

One member said aloud, "But the need (to go to the bathroom) is year-round!"

Perhaps the Burien City Manager is unaware there is a tree pruning and cutting permit process

Vote today; party tonight

Today's the last day to vote.

All ballots must be postmarked or put into a dropbox by today.

A dropbox can be found right outside the Ballard Branch Library (5614 22nd Ave NW). A list can be found here. Ballots must be inserted in the dropbox by 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 6).

Between all of the mailing services we have in town (Ballard Mailbox, Mailbox Ballard, Sip and Ship), it shouldn't be difficult to send it off through the mail, either. You just have to make sure it's postmarked for today.

Wondering who to vote for? The Ballard News-Tribune interviewed both 36th District candidates for Washington State Legislature -- Port Commission President Gael Tarleton and Progressive Majority Leader Noel Frame -- in our Coffee with Candidates series.
