Real Change newspaper to increase cover price from $1 to $2 beginning April 3; Vendors will earn more per sale

When Tacoma-born crooner Bing Crosby sang the hit "Brother Can You Spare a Dime" 80 years ago, ten cents equaled about a buck seventy-five today. Beginning April 3, vendors of Seattle's street newspaper, Real Change, will ask for a quarter more than that, charging two dollars a paper.

Here is the press release by Real Change Founder Timothy Harris:

It's Time for a Raise

Real Change costs $2 starting April 3rd

This April, Real Change will increase its cover price from $1 to $2, raising the amount that the vendor earns from the sale of a newspaper from $.65 to $1.40. This is the first price increase for Real Change readers since the paper started in September, 1994.

To help the vendors celebrate their raise, Real Change will hand a crisp $2 bill to every vendor that comes in when the new issue comes out on April 3rd. Vendors will begin selling the new issue upon its delivery to Real Change at 8:30 a.m.

Mt. Rainier girls tennis ties for first

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES-NEWS

Mount Rainier forged a three-way tie for first place in the SPSL 4A North Division with a tense 3-2 team tennis home victory against the previously undefeated Kentridge Chargers on Thursday, March 28, to put the Rams into a 4-1 record first place deadlock with Kentwood and the Chargers as the second half of the spring season approached.

"We've played Kentwood and Kentridge close, but this win got us over the hump," said Ram coach Tim Lee. "It was pretty exciting to beat Kentridge. The team is in a good spot and at least we're in the conversation, again."

With the schools deadlocked at two victories apiece and the sun slowing dissipating, the Ram doubles team of Anya Bonner and Karissa Pallagi drew attention on the end court. Bonner and Pallagi kept their composure in a 6-4 No. 3 doubles win against the Charger squad of Christine Huynh and Lin Nguyen. Mount Rainier had taken a 5-2 first set lead, but Kentridge fired back to trail only 5-4 before the Rams prevailed.

11-year prison sentence echoes security problems at Nickelsville today

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced an 11-year prison sentence for 37-year-old Shane Stephen Anello on March 29, in part for his guilty plea to a federal charge of unlawful possession of a destructive device.

That charge, according to U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan’s office, stemmed from an April 2012 incident where Anello threw a “firebomb” at a vehicle parked at Nickelsville, the homeless encampment located at the intersection of Highland Park Way S.W. and W. Marginal Way S.W. in West Seattle. Police said Anello threw a Molotov cocktail “at the car belonging to the person who had barred him from returning to the homeless camp.” Luckily, no one was hurt.

An Untold Life: James Sherman Wessels

EDITORS NOTE: This is the second article in our series 'An Untold Life.' These are stories of people in our community whose lives touched others and whose stories deserve to be told.

By Maggie Nicholson

James Sherman Wessels was born in the winter of 1948, a child of the light. He adored lying on his back, basking in the sunbeams of Washington summers. He frequented Alki Beach as well as a small park on Beach Drive, a favorite for its intimacy and seclusion.

James made a powerful first impression. He was a handsome man, with an attentive presence. He was fun-spirited, but intelligent enough to transition into formality when it was called for. He knew how to keep spirits up and was skilled at making people laugh.

He maintained trees, arranged flowers and decorated for holiday celebrations at his residence, Harbor West: an apartment condominium that juts out above the water, balancing on wooden stilts.

New friends, couples, and even his therapist, took James along on their vacations. He was the type of person you just wanted to have around.
