Detectives looking for female burglar

From Seattle Police Department

A female suspect is seen on video entering the victim’s garage. This morning just shortly after 3:00 a.m., residents were asleep in their home in the 8300 block of 9th NW when a noise woke them up. Upon checking they found their main garage door open. The homeowner closed the garage door and went back to bed.

They then heard the garage door opening. They returned to the garage and did not see anyone. However, they saw some of their tools moved over to the garage door area and found their vehicle had been rummaged through with paperwork being taken. The residence has video cameras. Upon review of the video footage they saw the suspect in their garage. The female suspect was wearing gloves. She is seen opening the door that leads into the residence, but does not enter.

The suspect is then seen leaving the garage and walking down the street. Officers conducted an area check for the suspect with negative results.

New life on 24th Ave NW

With one fell swoop, in the timespan of a few years, 24th Ave NW has gotten a complete facelift. Ballard mainstays have fallen off one by one (or, maybe more accurately, two by two) and have been replaced by newer, fresher, more upscale places.

The Viking, open since 1950, closed for good on May 1. The Copper Gate, “Scandalnavian” since 1946, closed June 30. The old Ballard Library was demolished in August. The Stepping Stone, Aster Coffee Lounge and O’Shan Sushi all had a shift in ownership and took on new identities over the summer.

Aster turned into Toast Ballard, O’Shan turned into Kimchi House, The Steppping Stone turned into a newer Stepping Stone, the Copper Gate turned into Olaf’s. A new branch of the Sunset Hill Market will be moving into the development at the old Viking location along with a restaurant.

Then, if you go back a few years, there’s the much-lamented departure of Archie McPhee’s and Old Jacobsen’s Marine on Market St.

Vote Yes on Prop 1: People who work for a living at Sea-Tac deserve to earn a living

Op/Ed by Roxan Seibel

In 1911, 146 women garment makers in New York City died tragically in a fire because the Triangle Shirt Company refused to ensure proper workplace safety. In response, women made history by forcing changes in public policy over the objections of corporate CEOs, from workplace safety to the Lily Ledbetter equal pay law signed last year.

That’s what SeaTac’s Proposition One is all about: Making sure that airport corporations making millions of dollars every year in our community do right by our community by paying living wages for over 6,300 parents and hard-working people just like me.

The No campaign tries to spread misinformation and confuse the issue. For example, one Seattle Times columnist wrote the real issue behind the debate isn’t whether people who work for a living should be paid a living wage. She argued it’s about the long term promise of the state’s legislature making a quality higher education attainable for people like me.

The West Seattle Helpline supports over 3,500 residents each year by providing one-time emergency financial assistance. This may be due to unemployment, health crisis, or time of transition. We also refer our neighbors to community resources that may help them get back on their feet. For more than 24 years, the West Seattle Helpline has assisted the working poor in West Seattle. Despite these efforts, we must turn away families every month and the need continues to rise.

Fresh Bucks program extended to the end of 2013

A program designed to connect low-income shoppers using food stamp assistance to feed their families with Seattle’s bountiful farmers markets will be extended until the end of 2013, rather than ending on Oct. 31 as originally planned, according to Seattle and King County Public Health.

Here’s how it works: Low-income residents receiving SNAP benefits receive up to $10 in matching funds from Public Health when they purchase fruits and vegetables at farmers markets, including the West Seattle Farmers Market and seasonal High Point Farm Stand (which has closed for the winter).

Get your Trick-or-Treating on in Ballard this Thursday, Oct. 31

This Thursday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m., Ballard businesses will be opening themselves up to trick-or-treaters, be they Dracula or be they Iron Man. You can spot participating merchants by the orange notice posted outside (see above). It's for "goblins 12 years and younger."

If that's not enough, maybe you should make the trek up to Loyal Heights, which was named the best neighborhood to trick-or-treat at in Seattle by Zillow. They say they calculated using the Zillow Home Value Index, population density, Walk Score and local crime data. Phinney Ridge was named the second best neighborhood. (Seattle placed a respectable fifth in top cities to trick-or-treat at around the nation.)

Local Handyman is running for District 49 Water commissioner.

Roger Gee is a local contractor/handyman in the Burien arearunning for Water District 49 Water Commissioner. Roger and his wife Susie have lived in Gregory Heights for the last 25 years.

According to his campaign announcement, "With District 49 having several capitol improvements to its infrastructure over the last two years, Roger decided to look into what was happening at the Commissioner meetings.

Having attended the bi-monthly commissioner meeting over the last four months, there was a pattern of behavior. Two of the three commissioners were doing most of the work while the third, if he attended the meeting sits on his hands and doesn't care what goes on around him. Roger decided that it was time to try and give back to his community and get involved with helping the District to save money and run more efficiently."
