HCC wins two out of four in tourney

By David Ball
For The Times/News

GRESHAM — Bellevue had Highline on the ropes in the second round of the Northwest volleyball championships Friday afternoon, but Ashley Barnum came out swinging to save the day for the Thunderbirds.

Highline was in must-win mode after dropping two of the first three sets to the Bulldogs. The Thunderbirds answered the call with Danielle Tabor hammering a big swing through the middle, and Megan Smith clipping the net for an ace that put the team up 10-7 early in the fourth set.
The knockout punch was moments away.

Barnum stepped to the service line and put the set out of reach with an 11-point spurt that saw teammates Tabor and Miranda Grieser take turns converting kills out of the front row. Highline found itself up 23-8 before Bellevue could force a side out.

“The adrenaline was high and everyone was looking to make a play — we were going after every ball,” Barnum said. “It was obvious we were going to win that game, so we started getting ready for the fifth set.”

$25,000 match fund awarded for holiday lights

Ballard Chamber to celebrate with tree lighting

With Thanksgiving approaching, Ballardites can be assured that their city-village will be a "clean, well-lighted place" for the holidays for years to come.

Due to a loss of funding, the holiday lights on Market Street and Ballard Avenue have been missing for the last couple years.

On Nov. 22 it was announced that a 25 thousand dollar Neighborhood Matching Fund Grant was awarded to Ballard by the City of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods. The grant will leverage private dollars in order to help make sure holiday lighting will be something the community sees every year.

The match funds apply to the lighting on Market Street, Ballard Avenue, and 22nd Avenue. The lighting is also going toward lighting in Marvin’s Garden Park and Bergen Park, which had been lit for the holidays the last couple years thanks to the Ballard Merchant Association.

Mike Stewart, Executive Director of the Ballard Chamber of Commerce, explained that the holiday aesthetics could make a real difference for local economy.

Life Planning

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

There is no end to what one can accomplish in life. Just this week, I sat down and filled a whole page with my plan of action for the coming year 2014. Here’s just a few of the things on the list.

  • Try out for a part in a play.
  • Keep doing comedy to keep my spirits high.
  • Update my family tree.

Since the West Seattle Rosie the Riveter group has diminished to only three of us I sent out a call to any women who worked during WWII and invited them to join our group. Yippee, I already have located three more Rosies. You can’t imagine the stories they have to tell. As you already know, I give talks about my Rosie experiences and Veteran’s Day is always a great time for reminiscing about WWII. I recently heard a talk focusing on the art of interviewing so that the older people in our community will not be forgotten. Hope that you are interviewing older family members for your family history.

Ballard Health Club sold to long-time members

By Peggy Sturdivant

A letter to the members went up at Ballard Health Club on Saturday night, November 23rd announcing that owners Lowen Clausen and his daughter Sonya Senstra had sold the club, effective January 1, 2014.

In order to head off what they knew would be collective screams of horror coming from every corner of the health club in the basement of the Ballard Building the owners posted an extensive explanation and introduction to the new owner.

In fact Lowen Clausen sent me back downstairs to read the sign so that I would stop hitting him as he paused in the lobby before going back to work on building project. “I’m 65 years old,” he said. “I’m missing a grandson’s birthday party right now because I work on the building seven days a week. It was getting to be time.”

His daughter Sonya is already a co-owner of the building (with her nine year-old son already planning his future stake. “I don’t see us ever selling the building,” he said, by way of assurance that it’s just the Ballard Health Club that’s been sold.

Store clerk pulled out his “big gun” and chased away would-be robbers

by Detective Renee Witt - Seattle Police Blotter

A store clerk chased away would be robbers last night in West Seattle. On 11/23/13, at approximately 10:00 p.m., two unknown masked males went into a store in the 8800 block of 9th Av SW and pointed a gun at the clerk, demanding money.

The clerk recognized that the gun the suspects were using was a fake, so he reached down and brought his own gun up, telling the would be robbers that his gun was “bigger”. The suspects ran out of the store, and quickly left in their getaway car.

An area check for the suspects was negative.
