Ever try locally brewed sake?

Local sake brewer shares a cup

“I discovered Nigori and ever since then, I’ve brewed sake,” said Jeff James, owner of Cedar River Brewing Company, a Phinney based Sake brewery.

Many Seattle residents may know his sake from Bloom, Mashiko, Miyabi 45th and
TanakaSan.

“I’ve been brewing for almost five years but just started distributing in October,” said James.

The brewery is named for the Cedar River, part of the local water source, and is a
“pastoral” aspect that lends to the tradition of sake.

A resident of West Seattle, James said he had an eye out for his current brewery
location for months and finally found it in Phinney.

James offers three different types of Sake: Nama, Junmai and Nigori. All three have a distinct character and flavor.

He brews the sake by starting with rice that has been milled past most rice

The Psychic View – Thinking Makes It So?

By Marjorie Young

I’ve adored Shakespeare since childhood. His genius pervades not only western culture, but every corner of the world. Even those never having seen his plays readily paraphrase him, though sometimes unknowingly. The examples are endless: ‘To be or not to be’…‘The course of true love never did run smooth’…‘It is a wise father that knows his own child’…‘What’s in a name?’…‘To thine own self be true.’

Dis/Oriented comedy show will feature West Seattle's Mona Concepcion

First ever (mostly) all-female Asian American standup comedy tour

Dis/orient/ed Comedy is a touring show that highlights local talent and professional comics from Los Angeles that is coming to, no, not West Seattle but Bellevue on March 16. For locals heading over to the eastside it had better be pretty special. This show qualifies. First it features West Seattle's own Mona Concepcion the Herald told you about in December.

But better than that, this show represents the first (mostly) all Asian American all female touring comedy show.

Hosted the by Jenny Yang with Atsuko Okatsuka also on the bill are Bri Pruett, Katie Nguyen, and Shannon Koyano.

They sold out the Renton Civic Theater on 3/16 of last year so their show at Parlor live will be the one year anniversary. The ladies have been selling out theaters and other large venues because they have really connected with the their core audience, the Asian-American community.

information from Seattle Parks

Seattle Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the Green Seattle Partnership, is undertaking another project to preserve portions of Me-Kwa-Mooks Park off SW Jacobsen Road. Activities will include control of 4 acres of invasive weeds, planting thousands of native plants, erosion control and litter removal with the help of urban forestry crews and volunteer support. The park itself is 20.2 acres in size.

The public can expect to see activity throughout the year on Parks-owned properties that lie along Jacobsen Road between the western boundary of SW Hudson and SW 56th Ave. The public will still have access to enjoy Me-Kwa-Mooks Park on established trails throughout the duration of the project. The project will help conserve one of West Seattle’s most majestic green spaces while supporting the overall environmental stewardship goals of the urban forest system.

Jerry's View: Never underestimate the power of prayer

My mom was a treasure and very tolerant of my dad's fight with the bottle during the depression. He'd come home many nights in his usual stupor, we kids would help undress him and put him to bed while mother lectured him. I am certain he did not hear a word of it as he would arise early the next morning for breakfast, never remembering much of the events the night before.

He looked around for his bottle, never finding it. We poured it into the open flame of the fire for the thrill of the swoosh and tossed the glass into the garbage.

Although mom lectured, it was never profane. Mostly educational on the dangers of alcohol. As a certified member of the WCTU (Women's Christian Temperance Union) mom strictly forbid herself from even a sip of the cursed fluid. She was influenced by the Reverend Clarence True Wilson, himself a tireless advocate of abstinence. Her devotion may have started there. It was he who married mom and dad in 1904.

Discover small gems in our business community

By Andrea Reay, Executive Director, Discover Burien

When Carlo, the owner of Osteria da Primo greeted me with a smile last Tuesday and said, “Take away?” , I had never even thought about the option. “Yes, please.” I ordered a custom wood-fired pizza to go, with a salad. About that time my three-year-old asked “dessert?” Lucky for us, The Maven

Mercantile was just a few doors down. My kids (and I) love Heidi’s amazing fresh-baked cookies. By the time we went next door to get the cookies and came back, our take away order was done and we were in the car and on our way home. I had a fresh pizza, salad and cookies to serve my family; nothing fake, nothing processed, and all delicious.

2014 Empty Bowls sets new record for local food banks

By Matt Wendland

Each year for the last nine years, the City of Burien and Discover Burien have hosted Empty Bowls. The event raises funds for both the Highline Area Food Bank and the White Center Food Bank which are both located at opposite ends of the Burien city limits.

Attendees of the event have the opportunity to support the food banks by purchasing hand forged bowls donated by the potters at Moshier Community Art Center. After selecting their wares, lunch or dinner in the form of food donated by a number of local businesses, is provided.

This year the event was held on January 31 at the Burien Community Center. 1,185 people attended the event and donated a total of $16,820.

23 soups were donated by local businesses in 2014 and this year the judges awarded Elliott Bay Brewery top honors for their corn chowder. Maven Mercantile took second place with their coconut yellow curry soup with roasted sweet potatoes and Emerald Cove Catering took third place with their Clam Chowder.
