Plan ahead to avoid delay

Information provided by SDOT

SEATTLE— Tomorrow, Thursday, May 1, an estimated 600 participants will gather at Judkins Park at 1 p.m. for a rally, and leave from that location at 3 p.m. on a march which will culminate in a May Day rally at Westlake Park. The event is organized by El Comité, http://elcomitewa.wordpress.com.

Leaving the park located at 20th Avenue South and South Dearborn Street, the marchers will move north on 20th to South Jackson Street; west on Jackson to Boren Avenue; north on Boren to Madison Street; west on Madison to Fourth Avenue; north on Fourth to Pine Street and into Westlake Park for a rally.

Seattle Police will escort the marchers, and motorists should expect a rolling slowdown and heavy traffic as the procession moves along the route to Westlake Park. Considerable congestion will likely occur and impact traffic throughout the Downtown area during the afternoon commute.

There is a possibility that Fourth Avenue will be closed during the rally at Westlake Park.

Spring `egg nest' wreath

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

I can tell spring is here because my neighbor who raises chickens gives me dozens of fresh eggs every week! There is nothing quite as good as a home-raised fresh egg. They are so fresh with bright orange yolks. The liquid white of fresh eggs is not runny, and sits in a mound around the yolk in the pan. And the flavor is unique. If you don’t have a generous neighbor drowning in eggs, check out your local farmers’ market for a fresh deal.

To check if your eggs are fresh, put them in a bowl filled with water about twice as deep as the egg. Fresh eggs are heavy and will sink. The older the egg, the bigger the air sack in them, and the more likely they will float.

Community Budget Workshops to help the City Council develop priorities for the 2015-16 budget

The Council will hold four meetings from May 6 to May 14. All meetings are from 6 to 8 p.m.

Holding the meetings during the Spring will allow Councilmembers to take the information and encourage the Mayor to include it in the budget he proposes to the City Council in September.

Each meeting will have a dual focus. First, we’ll focus on the budgets of specific departments as listed below. In addition, you’ll also be able to tell Councilmembers whether your neighborhood has specific needs and priorities. City government will transition to having seven district Councilmembers in 2016, as seen in the recently completed official districts map.

After brief presentations of each department’s budget, constituents will have the opportunity to participate in small group discussions with Councilmembers, and to list their priorities for the featured departments. The summaries of those priorities will be reported to those attending the Community Budget Workshops. Each meeting will have three Councilmembers in attendance.

If you have any questions, please contact Newell Aldrich at newell.aldrich@seattle.gov.

Lockhaven Tenants Union make new demands for GRE during rally last Sunday

“Goodman! Goodman! You can’t hide. We can see your greedy side!” was a popular mantra members of the Tenant’s Union of Washington, Lockhaven Tenants Union and Theodora Rescue Committee shouted as they marched through Ballard last Sunday, April 27.

The group was demonstrating against what they called John Goodman’s (Chairman of Goodman Real Estate) “retaliation” against union members. Demonstrators marched over a mile from Ballard Commons Park to Goodman’s home and personal marina, Golden Tides, near Rays Boat House. They stopped at Lockhaven on the way.

GRE bought Lockhaven last year and sent over 20 eviction notices to tenants without the proper license to do so. After obtaining a tenant Relocation License from the City last month, GRE sped up the relocation schedule for five Lockhaven tenants. Three happened to be Lockhaven Union members. One member's relocation timeline was sped up from five months to one.
