SLIDESHOW: Macklemore came to Roxhill Elementary to introduce the Buddy Bench

One of the biggest stars in music today, Macklemore, paid a surprise visit to Roxhill Elementary School on May 29 in support of the Youth Ambassadors. The program, that began in 2007 with the visit of the Dalai Lama, has long history with Macklemore.

His visit to Roxhill was to introduce the "Buddy Bench" an actual bench that will be installed at Roxhill that represents a place for those who are lonely to find a friend. Youth Ambassadors at Roxhill paired up 5th Grade students with 3rd Grade students to teach them compassion, kindness and tolerance.

Macklemore, with the help of several students demonstrated how the bench might work if someone felt lonely or in need of a friend. Then it was time for pictures and a off to the gym where he answered questions from the Ambassdors about his life, and much more.

New bike safety camps for young children to be offered in June

Many Ballardites celebrated May’s Bike to Work Month by riding their bikes more frequently. Some are more mindful of pedestrians while driving. No matter how citizens celebrate, the issue of safety, education and mindfulness is important while on the streets of Seattle.

Moreover, safety and accessibility are key in the implementation of the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plans, and with an unprecedented flux of people moving to the region, conflict on the road is paramount.

Incidentally, in this time of need, a British Columbia based company called, Pedalheads Bike Camps, has rolled to the region to offer their learn-to-ride bike program for children age two to twelve.

The camp programs are designed to teach beginner cyclers bike skills needed to lose the training wheels and build the knowledge and safely needed to independently ride urban roads.

Ben Oryall is Manager of Regional Expansion for Pedalheads, and said that since 1995 they have trained over 160 thousand kids to safely ride their bicycles, and now he’s looking forward to offer the programs to kids in the Seattle area.

You Are What You Eat: Forget me not…using edible flowers in your food

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

Spring is here, and my garden is overflowing with edibles! Yes, it has lettuce and rhubarb and asparagus, but the best-kept seasonal menu secret is the flowers. After a long winter of dreary greens and veggies shipped from halfway around the world, I am ready for something fresh, local and unique. Luckily, lots of flowers are edible.

I have mounds of violets in my yard. They are such good “volunteers” I have to pull some out; they are almost weeds! My favorite use for the purple blossoms is adding them to salads. Nothing tells the story of spring quite like a salad with violets.

I also pour boiling water over them and make them into the most fragrant violet jelly you can imagine. You can also “candy” violets, coating them with sugar. Take a look at a fancier grocery store; candied violets are about $200 a pound, but you can make them in just a few minutes. Or you can candy forget-me-nots (Myosotis) and the white blossoms of sweet bedstraw (Galium triflorum), which hold nectar.

The Psychic View: A Squandered Life

By Marjorie Young

One recent news event captured my attention, proving at once both bizarre and distressing. A man in his seventies, living in a small Kansas town, attacked a Jewish Community Center, shooting down a grandfather and his fourteen-year-old grandson in the parking lot. He then headed to a nearby Jewish Assisted Living Facility, murdering a woman on the way to visiting her elderly mother. The motive for the slaughter was ‘killing Jews’…the shooter harboring a life-long hatred of anyone practicing that religion. To punctuate the issue, he shouted out pro-Nazi slogans while being hauled away by the police.

The terrible irony was that none of the victims were Jewish; on the contrary, the dead were regular church-goers. Besides every other deplorable aspect of the incident, it struck me as absurd that, having spent a lifetime hating Jews, and even serving as the ‘Grand Dragon’ of the Klu Klux Klan, the shooter could not, in the end, even distinguish the targets of his malice from the rest of humanity!
