Now you can kayak on the Seattle waterfront: Alki Kayak Tours opens a Bell Harbor location

Greg Whittaker believes in paddling. No not his 2 and 4 year old boys. He is a devout kayaker and has built a healthy business at Seacrest with Alki Kayak Tours plus his other businesses, M2s Beach Rentals on Alki and Mountain 2 Sound Outfitters where kayaks, standup paddle boards, skis and all that goes with those items do a brisk business.

But as he looked at the City of Seattle's plans for the redevelopment of the waterfront he realized he had an opportunity. He came up with a plan to offer guided kayak tours from Bell Harbor at Pier 66 and in mid may he literally launched the newest phase of his business.

Alki Kayak Tours at Bell Harbor will take people on tours around the historic Seattle waterfront from the sheltered launch waters of Bell Harbor at Pier 66. They have five boats some with three riders, others with two and all tours are accompanied by an experienced guide. This differs from the West Seattle operations in that you can't just rent a kayak for your own paddle. These are tours only.

Photo Enforcement cameras coming to five schools

information from SDOT

To improve pedestrian safety, contractors working for the City of Seattle will be installing photo enforcement cameras at five locations during May and June. They will be located near the following schools:  Roxhill Elementary and Holy Family School in West Seattle, Dearborn Park Elementary in Southeast Seattle, Bailey Gatzert Elementary in Central Seattle, and Eckstein Middle School in Northeast Seattle.

The cameras will issue citations to drivers that exceed the school zone speed limit of 20 mph. The school zone speed limit is in effect for typically one hour in the morning as students arrive at school, and one hour in the afternoon when the school day ends. Flashing beacons have been installed to emphasize the times when the school zone speed limit is in effect.  The cameras will issue warnings for 30 days beginning September 2 and will start issuing citations in early October.

West Seattle's Belli Vita featured on KING 5 New Day

A pregnancy is a fleeting event in a lifetime. For many women it's a time like no other with a rush of memories and mixed emotions that results in pure love. But for local business person Laura Marie Peters, that time in a woman's life seemed like an opportunity.

She and her daughters operate Belli Vita whose mission is to create plaster casts of the bellies of pregnant women, then create blown glass or porcelain molds from them in extraordinary colors and patterns. That work is done by West Seattle glass artist Melissa Misoda whose work you can see here: https://www.facebook.com/misodaglass .

The baby's name is inscribed on the bowl and often photos are taken after the birth of the baby in the bowl. It's a commemoration of the pregnancy, and a way to honor both mother and child. Peters also does casts of a woman's torso.

Since we first covered her business in 2011, she has begun offering a kit you can order to do the casting process yourself at home.

Peters has recently been getting the attention of some famous names (we can't mention them just yet), who are using the process too.

Get cranked for the fourth annual Ballard Bike Street Party

The City of Seattle’s Summer Streets project is partnering with Cascade Bicycle Club to top off National Bike Month with the fourth annual Ballard Bike Street Party.

On Thursday, May 29, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., a good chunk of downtown Ballard will be reserved for bicycle revelry at Ballard Avenue Northwest from 22nd Avenue Northwest to Market Street and 22nd Avenue Northwest from Ballard Avenue Northwest to Market Street.

Disciples of the bike can anticipate a profusion of peddle-preponderance because the event has expanded since last year.

Peter Verbrugge, Event Producer of the Ballard Bike Street Party, said that this year is unique because they have added two more streets to the party thanks to the Ballard Chamber of Commerce and are able to offer a lot more festivities than past years.

The party has a staggering array of featured events, guests, and activities for people new to the wheel and cycle-freaks alike.

Partygoers can expect to stomp and swagger to live music from local Ballard band, Swearengens, on the main stage.

Coffee à la cart, hold the syrup

By: Christy Wolyniak

Two local coffee aficionados have made it their civic duty to educate Seattle and beyond on the finer things, especially on slowing down with an experience that has a ring of nostalgia to it.

Handlebar Coffee, a human-powered café on wheels caters pure, specialty black coffee through the streets of Seattle thanks to founders David Rothstein and Alex Johnstone, who saw a serious lack in specialty coffee carts.

“We loved the idea of coffee on the go. We always took coffee camping and we took good coffee, so we were excited about bringing this to a few places and kind of being like a flash-mob coffee shop that pops up and stirs people’s curiosity,” said Johnstone.

“Coffee facilitates community, as do small businesses and bikes, so it’s really the natural crux of who we are and a reflection of the city,” commented Rothstein on Handlebar’s beginnings.

The baristas began with what they already possessed: an avid love for coffee and the great outdoors, and some mad box-making skills thanks to high school woodshop.
