Sailboarder loses control; Rescued by good Samaritan

Eight units, two being water rescue vessels, were dispatched to Golden Gardens after a 30-year-old male lost control of his sailboard.

Seattle fire department officials said that the border lost control of his board and fell in the water. After not being able to get back on the board, a good Samaritan boater towed the individual to the point of the beach where he was able to swim ashore. The man suffered no injuries, though shaken.

'No Bridges' spans Vashon's history, culture, and spirit

By Conrad Wesselhoeft

Vashon Island's history and spirit were the stars of "Vashon Suite: No Bridges," an original 45-minute song cycle that premiered Sunday to a wildly enthusiastic audience on the island.

"No Bridges" was written by West Seattle composer Bronwyn Edwards. It was performed by the 60-member Vashon Island Chorale under the direction of Dr. Gary Cannon.

A second and final performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, July 1) at Fauntleroy Church (9140 California Ave. SW, 98136) in West Seattle.

"This piece is incredibly special because it's about you," Cannon briefed the singers moments before the sold-out concert at Bethel Church. "It's your story. It's your Puget Sound that Chief Seattle paddled through. It's the strawberries that you bought yesterday. So sing your life. Sing your story."

An early song in the cycle, "Boy With a Paddle," painted a picture of young "Si'alth" exploring the shores and islands in his canoe. This boy was to grow into Chief Seattle.

Capitol Hill Block Party 2014 Schedule

The Capital Hill Block Party kicks off Friday, July 25 at 4 p.m. with the dreamy soundscapes of Shy Girls taking over the Main Stage and closes out Monday, July 28 at 2 a.m. with Seattle-based punk-rockers Murmurs on the Cha Cha Stage. The full schedule brought to you by our partners at Weedmaps can be found online at http://schedule.capitolhillblockparty.com

“One thing that makes the Capitol Hill Block Party special is that the next stage is never far away but you won’t hear any sound bleed from one stage to the other,” said Jason Lajeunesse, the festival’s owner and producer. “We wanted to balance this year’s schedule so attendees could move from stage to stage and find a mix of genres playing at the same time.”

In order to make the full lineup of national acts available to everyone, CHBP organizers announced earlier an expanded ALL AGES second stage. Dum Dum Girls, Robert Delong, EMA and Man or Astro-man? are among the artists who will perform on the Vera Stage presented by Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card.

National bests Southwest to open

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Caleb Dierda hit 4-for-4 and almost completed a cycle as South Highline National defeated Southwest of White Center, 15-2, in the opening game of the District 7 Intermediate Little League All-Star Tournament Friday.
Douglas Hobbs backed Dierda up by hitting 3-for-4 with a double and Cole Thompson hit 2-for-2 as National pounded out 11 hits.

Southwest scored its two runs on five hits and had Colby Sessions hit 2-for-3.

National now advances to play West Seattle in the winner's bracket final of the three-team tournament at PacWest Field No. 3 in Burien at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The loser plays Southwest in the loser's bracket final at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The championship is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday and the if-necessary game of the double-elimination tournament for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Friday's game was stopped in the middle of five innings by a 10-run rule.

Dierda singled in the first, doubled in the second and tripled in both the third and the fourth -- with the latter hit close to scoring him with a home run.

Gators edged by Otters in swim opener

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Even though the Arbor Heights Otters won the Seattle Summer Swim League dual meet, 379-355, over Gregory Seahurst's Gators, the words from the Otters coach Chris Veraya made one think there were two winners after swimmers competed at the Gregory Seahurst pool Thursday.

And, for the Gators, that would be good praise, indeed, after having been one of the weaker SSSL teams for a long time now.

"Give a lot of the credit to that guy right there, Mike Fosberg, the Gregory Seahurst coach," said Arbor Heights coach Veraya. "They are making amazing gains. I'm a little scared for next year."

The dual meet was closer than the final score, too, and it's the first time in a long time that the score's been that close, in fact anywhere near to that close.

"Really close meet all the way through," said Gregory Seahurst coach Fosberg, who mentioned that the Gators have been losing to the Otters, and all the other SSSL swim teams, in dual meets by a 100 points or more for the last 10 years plus.

Police seek public’s help in homicide of 100 year old Sea Tac resident

By Tim Clifford

This morning the King County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release asking for the public’s help in the homicide of a 100 year old Sea Tac resident. The victim, Robert O. Benson, was discovered dead in his home over the weekend and while the exact cause of death remains undetermined police have designated the case as a homicide.

A brown leather wallet with scruff marks containing the victim’s ID and bank cards was missing from his residence and police are asking for people to be on the lookout for it. An AARP card, Medicare card and car insurance were also in the wallet.

Anyone with information about the wallet or about what may have happened over the weekend to the victim are asked to call the King County Sheriff’s Office at (206) 296-3311.

Fireworks alternatives can still be really fun

By Scott Anthony

While public fireworks displays are the safest way to celebrate the holiday, not everyone can attend one, and because more and more municipalities are rejecting the use of personal fireworks due to fires and injuries, (ask a local firefighter about it) maybe it’s time to consider some safer celebratory options this year.

For the record, over all the years I’ve had access to matches, I have burned enough sparklers, blown up enough firecrackers and shot enough bottle rockets to have my own booth on the rez. But that was the old me, the guy who really liked the sound of an M-80 at 3:00 am weeks before the fourth, or the smell of smoke and burning rubber as I stomped out large, low grass fires in my tennis shoes at the local park.

And who doesn’t like the sight of a roman candle as it sends volley after volley of roaring fire onto the neighbor’s roof.
