Police Blotter Week of 7-28-14

Police blotter

By Tim Clifford

West Seattle officers assist in arrest
On July 17 a teller at a bank in the 1200 block of 5 Ave. called police to report an attempted robbery by a homeless man. The suspect passed a note to the teller that read “Homeless, hungry, I need your money, give it to me now”. Officers from the southwest precinct were asked to assist in the investigation.

When officers arrived at the scene the teller and a witness described the suspect as a black male in his 40’s or 50’s with dred locks and a dirty jeans and sneakers. The suspect left the building after being told by the teller “we don’t do that”.

Bike officers were able to locate the suspect on 4 Ave and Seneca. This time the suspect was holding a sign that read “homeless could you spare some lill money?”. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody for investigation of bank robbery.

Take Two #132: Are you Prepared?

By Kyra-lin Hom

Stockpiling food, water and bandages used to be for the paranoid. Burying homemade caches of money and weapons used to be alien concepts associated with survivalist crazies and backyard neighborhood militiamen. Hand-crank radios and portable solar panels used to be for techno enthusiasts more than your standard outdoorsman. But times are gradually changing.

Whether our recent social obsession with zombies and apocalypses, our sensational crime reporting, the rocky global economy, or the planet-wide meteorological meltdown are to blame, survival is on everyone's mind. Even FEMA's.

Immigration is a multi-faceted issue; How are we going to deal with it?

By Scott Anthony

We stopped at Taco Bell for lunch yesterday and while in line, we saw the girl behind the counter chatting with a customer about a coin she received in payment from a previous customer.

When I got up to give my food order, I asked her what it was, a Russian coin?

‘It’s a centavo, I think’ she said. While we ate, I told my friend that a centavo is worth about 1/10 of a U.S. penny, and we considered the event together. Not uncommon to get a foreign coin in your change, as we have been getting Canadian coins in our pockets for many years, and they used to considered it legal coinage in this country, though now some businesses will not accept them if they’re found. I asked the girl about whether the coin was Russian because I had learned recently about the influx of Russian currency into this area as well. Mostly, it’s counterfeit $20s and $100s, according to a guy I spoke with at the auto parts store.

Angle Lake's 'Clean Sweep' yields a Browning 30 caliber machine gun

The Angle Lake Shore Club of SeaTac, WA held their annual 'Clean Sweep' on Saturday, July 26th, 2014. The Clean Sweep is a volunteer event focused on clearing the lake area community of litter, trash and debris.

This year nearly 30 members and friends gathered at the Angle Lake Park boat ramp to collect bags, trash grabbers and gloves furnished by the City of SeaTac Parks Department. The group was split up with part heading out to the main streets and thoroughfares and the rest equipped with snorkels, fins and dive tanks took on the job of clearing the shoreline and deeper waters of Angle Lake.

When complete, the trash recovered filled the back end of a Parks Department Flat Bed Service truck. Content were mostly litter, cans and bottles but also included a few unique finds recovered from under the water. That which included half a wooden boat; a complete lawnmower; plus a Browning 30 caliber machine gun acquired adjacent to the fishing docks at the public park.

Mayor Murray announces passing of former mayor Paul Schell

It is with great sadness that Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announces the passing of Seattle’s 50th mayor, Paul Schell, who served from 1998-2002. Schell died this morning surrounded by family and friends at Swedish Hospital. He was 76 years old.

Schell will be remembered as one of the great city builders of the Pacific Northwest. As a citizen activist, lawyer, director of community development, port commissioner, dean of architecture and mayor he directly shaped the civic infrastructure of Seattle for more than 40 years.

Schell’s greatest professional accomplishment has been the infrastructure that he built and influenced. The first Libraries for All campaign was a brainchild of Schell’s, establishing and building a new downtown library and rebuilding branches throughout the city. He led the effort to fund Seattle’s first parks levy, rebuild the opera house and was instrumental in building the Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle’s City Hall and Justice Center.
