SLIDESHOW: Williams and Collier stand out at UW

By Ed Shepherd
Sports Correspondent
Kennedy Catholic star and graduate Aminah Williams and Seattle Christian Schools standout and graduate Katie Collier played instrumental roles in helping the University of Washington women's basketball team devastate Ivy League school Yale, 81-51, on the Alaska Airlines Arena floor Sunday.

"They are two of our inside presences," said UW women's coach Mike Neighbors, who spoke of the 6-0 forward Williams and the 6-3 center/forward, Collier. "This year, Katie's made solid strides. Her sophomore year. She's coming back from a meniscus tear, last season, as a freshman. She's really progressing. Aminah Williams will have an opportunity to earn some money next year."

That latter thing said, about Williams, since she's a senior... Hmmm, if one does the math, that means she has the talent to play at the next level, in the WNBA, or 'Women's National Basketball Association.' So, high praise there for Williams from her coach.

Bulldogs bow out in tourney

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

PARKLAND--Foster barked pretty loudly to begin its match against Washington, getting ahead, 20-14, in the first set.

But there was one problem, no bite, as the Patriots came back to win that first game and subsequently the match by scores of 24-26, 28-30, 25-18, 18-25, to eliminate the Bulldogs from the West Central District 3 2A Volleyball Tournament at Washington High School in Parkland Friday.

"We battled, missed some opportunities," said Buldogs' coach Brandi Travess. "First two games ahead and should have been able to put them away and win the match."

The Bulldogs began the match, in game one, battling, as, both they and the Patriots exchanged points via good serves from players on their teams for a 10-10 tie.

UW soccer feature - Lange, Jones, Oganga - revised

Area grads lead UW men's soccer team

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

SEATTLE--The University of Washington's excellent run into the Elite 8 of the NCAA men's soccer tournament can be partially attributed to the season success of two local players, Kennedy Catholic grad Ian Lange and Mount Rainier grad Darwin Jones, with Jones experiencing a quad pull five games ago but still did plenty this season for the Huskies.

Lange's been a force all season for the Dawgs, including helping the Huskies, on offense and defense, not to mention, the do-or-die PK ending of the round of 16 Furman University game. The UW beat the Paladins from Greenville, S.C., 6-5, after the 90-minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute "golden goal" overtimes and a penalty kick, sudden death, shootout, finale at Husky Field Sunday.

Mayor's office releases draft of proposed medical cannabis ordinance

New system regulating medical marijuana is unlikely to be in place until 2016

After extensive conversations with medical marijuana dispensaries, patient advocates, health care providers and community interests, Mayor Ed Murray’s Office of Policy and Innovation has drafted a proposed ordinance that would govern the production and sale of medical marijuana products in the City of Seattle.

“We want to strike the balance of protecting patients, ensuring access to medical marijuana and responding to concerns about the location and density of dispensaries,” said Murray. “We know the state legislature will be considering bills this session, but in the absence of a state framework, Seattle must act.”

The state Liquor Control Board (LCB) regulates the production and sale of recreational marijuana, but there are not similar regulations for medical marijuana. Even if the legislature addresses the disparity in the 2015 legislative session, a new system regulating medical marijuana is unlikely to be in place until 2016.

Ballard celebrates local businesses and cheer over holiday weekend

Ballard Gives Black Friday is back

Ballard is keeping it local over this holiday weekend starting on Black Friday (Nov. 28) with Ballard Gives Black Friday. The festivities continue through Saturday with Shop Local Saturday and an afternoon filled with holiday events at Marvin's Garden Park.

Over 20 Ballard businesses are participating in Ballard Gives Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving. Instead of deal-crazed consumers camping out in front of Ballard stores before 6 a.m., customers can pay it forward with BGBF. Shop at any one of the participating Ballard businesses and a portion of what shoppers spend go to a local non-profit. Some businesses are continuing the holiday cheer through Sunday.

Ryan and Lanne Stauffer, owners of Market Street Shoes, spearheaded BGBF a couple years ago and since then it has gained momentum.

“We started a few years ago to move away from the big box, big discount mindset and to think about ways for people to give their shopping dollars depth and power. For us it made sense for us to give back to a non-profit instead of discounts,” said Ryan Stauffer.

Volleyball
Kennedy Catholic
The Lancers split four matches at the West Central District Class 3A tournament held at Auburn-Mountainview to fall short of this weekend's state tournament. Kennedy Catholic finished with a 25-3 overall record, but was without the talents of Shayne McPherson -- the Seamount League Most Valuable Player -- because of an ankle injury. The Lancers opened with a 3-0 victory over Kelso on Friday, Nov. 7 to set up a second match that evening with a state berth on the line. North Thurston got the best of the Lancers, however, by a 3-0 game score.
JFK rebounded to beat Bonney Lake, 3-0, the next morning but were eliminated by Prairie, 3-1.
The Lancers needed to win that much plus one more to get to state by way of the loser's half of the bracket.

Evergreen
The Wolverines were eliminated from the West Central District Class 2A tournament by a 3-2 loss to Seamount League rival Lindbergh Saturday. Evergreen had beaten the Eagles twice during the regular season.
