Highline Public Schools Seeks Feedback on Aging Facilities & Crowding Issues

The district asks families, staff, students, and community members to take a 10-minute online survey

Burien, WA– Highline Public Schools is seeking input from the community on how to address the district’s need to build, repair, and renovate schools to meet educational needs, safety standards, and the community’s growing student population.

After failing to reach the 60 percent vote needed to pass a capital construction bond, both in November 2014 and February 2015, the district must now decide how to address pressing enrollment and facility needs. Student enrollment in Highline is projected to grow by 2,500 students over the next 8-10 years.

“We will not ask the community to vote on a bond in 2015,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield. “Instead, we will take this year to listen to the community and learn more about what our parents, staff, and community members want to see as a solution.”

To collect feedback, Highline is launching a short online survey on April 23. The survey is easy to access and is a convenient way to share input and ideas. The survey is open until Monday, May 11. All are invited to take the survey.

Results will remain anonymous and input will help the superintendent and school board develop a plan for meeting the needs of students and staff.

Sea-Tac Airport’s Center Runway to Close for Reconstruction

The Port of Seattle is set to begin reconstruction of the center runway (designated as 16C/34C) at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The runway, which was originally built in 1969, is scheduled to be closed between May 4 and October 30, 2015. Reconstruction is not expected to impact flight schedules, passenger traffic, or any other airport operations.

The project will also include installation of a new LED runway lighting system and an automated electronic Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection system to provide additional safety on the runway. Portions of connecting taxiways will also be replaced and/or repaired, along with associated electrical, water, and aging storm water infrastructure.

During the reconstruction all air operations (takeoffs and landings) will be directed to the airport’s two other runways. Nearly 1,000 daily operations occur on the airfield and detailed plans have been developed to minimize conflicts between construction activities and aircraft operations.

Four all-new plays by Washington playwrights in 2015 Bill and Peggy Hunt Playwright's Festival

For about the price of a matinee movie theater ticket, you can see two brand-new and award-winning plays live in May during the Playwrights Festival at Burien Actors Theatre.

The 2015 Bill & Peggy Hunt Playwrights Festival offers four weekends of four new shows written by Washington State Playwrights from May 1 through May 24.

Tickets are just $10, and each ticket includes admission to two plays--a one-act followed by a full-length.

From May 1-10, the one-act The Study Group is paired with the full-length The Skilled Use of Blunt Objects. The Study Group, written by Stephan Feldman, is a one-act comedy-drama in which a hare-brained prank involving a mouse and a desk leads to issues of sexual ethics. The Skilled Use of Blunt Objects, written by Thomas Pierce, is a full-length drama that explores just how far people will go to get elected.

Pats View: Leaders Club

By Pat Cashman

I was in the 7th grade at catholic school---and very worried.

Teachers didn’t normally tell a kid to stay after class unless there was trouble brewing. So when Sister Mildred Marie told me to stick around after the final bell, I knew something was afoot. Or ahead. Or somewhere in between the foot and the head.

As it turned out, the nun offered a stunning reversal of my worst expectations.

“Pat,” Sister began, “I have very good news for you.” I swallowed hard, as she continued. “Have you ever heard of the Leader’s Club?” she asked.

“I have not heard of that club,” I said, waiting to be hit over the head with one.
“It’s an honorary organization that only special students are chosen to be a part of,” Sister said. “And you, Pat, have been selected.”
I stood stunned, uncomprehending. She filled in the blank: “It means that you are being
recognized as a school LEADER!”

Police arrest two men outside Tukwila uniform retailer

Police arrest two men outside Tukwila uniform retailer
According to the Burien Police department, two men were arrested after police spotted them waiting outside a uniform retailer in Tukwila. The incident took place on Friday, April 10, when two Burien Police Department detectives arrived at a police uniform retailer off highway 99 in Tukwila and spotted two men acting suspiciously outside of the store. The detectives ran a check on the license plate numbers of the Jeep the two men were sitting in and discovered that it was a stolen vehicle. When two additional officers from the King County Sheriff’s Department arrived to visit the uniform retailer, the Burien detectives decided to confront the men in the Jeep. The two men were arrested without incident for possession of a stolen vehicle but it is unclear why the men were waiting outside of the police uniform retailer.

Crimes reported between 4/2/15 and 4/16/15

‘Abstract by Nature’ is theme for Burien Arts Gallery solo show

“Abstract by Nature,” a solo show by Olympia painter Becky Knold begins Friday, May 8 at the Burien Arts Gallery.

“The paintings selected for this exhibit at the Burien Arts Gallery are visual evidence of things I’ve seen in the natural world, even though they may not depict the realistic appearance of their source,” Becky explains.

“In fact, it’s not my intention to paint ‘reality’ but to capture the essence of a memory. These paintings have as their source a vision of nature that has been internalized, distilled and held onto as a kind of visual memory, and finally expressed as a painting that is ‘Abstract by Nature.’”

Meet Becky at the Opening Reception Friday, May 8, 5-8 p.m. at the Burien Arts Gallery, 826 S.W. 152nd St.

The exhibit ends Sunday, May 31.

Becky will also exhibit contemporary sculpture pieces.

Works by Liz Simpson and Marta Creswell will also be featured in the Artists United room at the Gallery. Both artists like to experiment with different art forms, including mixed media and collage.

The Burien Arts Gallery is open noon-6 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday. The Gallery is closed Monday and Tuesday.
