At Large In Ballard: The Week in Review

By Peggy Sturdivant

I remember warning a young parent that from the time your child starts kindergarten time speeds up. The days that seemed too long walking back from Ballard, pushing the empty stroller and balancing groceries and giraffe toy while the toddler examined every blade of grass, you’ll miss them.

How did life get so busy I wondered? How did life and politics in Ballard become so hectic? I’ve stopped trying to pinpoint the moment of change. I used to wonder, was it that New York Times article? Was it Amgen’s campus? (Okay, is it the change to district elections?) It doesn’t matter anymore because we are changed. I asked myself this last crazy week, bouncing from one crowded meeting in Ballard to the next, did the circus come to town? Or are we the circus?

'Ghosts of Seattle Past' accepting submissions for missed places in Seattle

Author/Editor Jaimee Garbacik is launching a project called The Ghosts of Seattle Past, and anyone with memories of Seattle’s lost spaces is invited to be a part of the project.

Seattle has always been a boom town, shaped as much by the gold rush of the 19th century as by the explosion of the tech industry today. And yet, this most recent surge of development has provoked an outpouring of emotion and nostalgia, as week by week our beloved quintessentially Seattle haunts disappear. It seems the entire city is grieving its changing face, in conversation, on Facebook, through art installations and digital tributes. But what about something tangible that we can hold in our hands? What will preserve our stories and map the city’s immediate past before our memories fade? Nothing is being done to permanently compile the spaces that meant so much to us…until now.

“This is not an effort to stem the tide of change nor to debate Seattle’s future, but a suggestion that we reflect on its past“ said project curator Jaimee Garbacik, “Wherever this city may be going, may we remember what it’s been, and who we’ve been in it.”

Cruise ship catches fire at Fishermen's Terminal

Earlier this morning Seattle Firefighters responded to a fire at Deck 3 of Fishermen's Terminal at 1511 West Thurman St.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. SFD dispatchers received a call that there was a fire on a Un-Cruise cruise ship called the Safari Voyager. The ship is mooring at the terminal and undergoing construction.

The fire happened inside the ship and was limited to one room. SFD investigators are still determining what caused the blaze, but Lieutenant Johnson of SFD reported that there was welding work being dong on the deck when the fire started.

Station 27 units were dispatched to the scene. By the time firefighters arrived the welders had extinguished the flame.

Investigators have not reported just how much damage the vessel sustained.

WOODINVILLE--A second loss in as many games spelled the end of the line for West Seattle at the Majors age 11-12 baseball all-stars state tournament Sunday.

The Westsiders took a 10-3 loss to Stilly Valley at the Northshore Athletic Fields in Woodinville on the heels of a 6-1 loss to host Northwest on Saturday.

West Seattle came into the tournament as the District 7 champions after winning a four-team tournament.
Last year it hosted the state tournament at the Bar S complex and fared well but lost to Pacific -- the eventual Western Regional champion and a World Series participant -- to be eliminated.

The Westsiders were managed by Stan Debiec, who was assisted by coaches Brian Pare and Steve Joseph.
Players were Nat Ardales, Spencer Burgess, Diego Contratto, Max Debiec, JP Dufour, Chase Eldredge, Dylan Mastroianni, Reece McAllister, Jasper Mors, Gabe Palmer, Sam Pare, Nate Rasmussen and Jaden Sadis.

O’Brien responds to city council action for homeless encampments

With the City Council moving to “pass the buck” earlier this month by signing off on a letter with recommendations for Mayor Murray’s proposed transitional homeless encampments and not moving toward a resolution, many Ballardites are frustrated with the actions of their city officials and feel they have missed an opportunity to have a say about the encampment location.

Back in March the council approved legislation to use public city land as transitional homeless encampments. The Mayors Office was charged with coming up with seven locations. Earlier this month the locations were announced and one is located in Ballard at 2826 NW Market Street.

The law did not require the Office of the Mayor to seek a resolution for the locations from the City Council. But the Office did seek a resolution, and the Council responded by “signing off” on the locations through a letter rather than moving toward a resolution.
