Second UnitedHealthcare IRONKIDS® Seattle Fun Run Motivates Local Youth to Lead Active, Healthy Lifestyles

Washington’s First Ever IRONKIDS Course for Physically Challenged Children

SEATTLE (Aug. 22, 2015) — Nearly 75 young athletes participated in the second UnitedHealthcare IRONKIDS® Seattle Fun Run today at Genesee Park. UnitedHealthcare mascot Dr. Health E. Hound kicked-off the fun run, joined by Sylvia Villalovos-Aguilar, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Washington.

Local athletes, ages 3-15, had the opportunity to run along portions of the Iron Girl Seattle course, which takes place tomorrow. For the first time in Washington, IRONKIDS offered 1-mile and ¼-mile tracks for physically challenged youth athletes. At the start of the fun run, Villalovos-Aguilar presented a check for $3,000 to local community partner Victory Outreach Children’s Ministry to help promote the organization’s free programs for Seattle youth.

“The IRONKIDS fun run is a great way for our community to come together in an active and healthy way and to teach our youth the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” said Doug Bowes, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Washington. “UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to partner with IRONMAN and the Victory Outreach Children’s Ministry.”

SCARY PEOPLE INQUIRE TODAY....

A recent transition in the community put the annual haunted house on the chopping block. One of the premier events of the Boo In Burien has been the Moss Chiropractic Haunted House. Moss is not under new ownership that choose not to continue the frightful festivities. Not to fear (well, maybe a little), Hot Feet Fitness with their new studio located at the corner of Ambaum & 152nd stepped up to save center piece of the Boo In Burien! The Hot Feet Fitness Haunted House will scare on!

Although Hot Feet Fitness is stoked to host this event, they are rather overwhelmed with the thought of living up to this daunting task of making this premier, southend scare, well, super scary! So, they are asking for horrifyingly scary people to step up to help. They need a main organizer to lead the annual event and many volunteers to help with various aspects of the event including planning, building, scaring, clean-up and organizing.

Hot Feet Fitness is committed to continue the tradition of providing fully free scares at the freakiest annual party in Burien. To learn more and to volunteer, email: boo@hotfeetfitness.com or call 206-519-5450

Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner Establishes STEM Scholarship

Highline Alum Stipulates Preference for Applicants from Hometown

Burien, WA– Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner and his wife Katie have established an endowed scholarship fund at Central Washington University giving preference to students from Highline Public Schools who are pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines, or an education degree in one of the STEM fields.

“A $10,000 scholarship is a life-changing opportunity,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield. “We are so grateful to Ray and Katie for their support of our students.”

Since Conner grew up in Burien and is a Highline alumnus, the scholarship stipulates that preference be given to applicants from Highline. The award is need-based and students can be first-year or transfer students.

“Hard work, preparation and leadership are all skills impressed on me during my studies at CWU and Highline Schools,” said Conner. “I am pleased I am able to give back and provide students from my community with the same opportunities I had.”

Students may apply for the scholarship later this fall at www.cwu.edu/scholarships/.

Information from Seattle Parks

Rock climbing is fast becoming the sport of choice for many in search of an athletic activity with both grit and Zen. Climbing, it seems, is scaling into the mainstream. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, more than 10 million people in the United States participate in rock climbing at some level, and Seattleites in particular have embraced this sport with a passion, with rock climbing gyms and venues, indoor and outdoor, growing exponentially. To celebrate both this coming-of-age time for the sport of climbing and Seattle’s long-standing mountain and climbing history/community, Seattle Parks and Recreation will open its historic Camp Long for a Mountain Festival on Sept. 13, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—where anyone, from the novice to the hard-core enthusiast, can put hands on the rocks and get feet off the ground.

Charges filed in Junction apartment shooting between two brothers

By Tim Clifford

This week the King County Prosecutor’s Office filed a charge of Assault in the First Degree and set a bail amount of $500,000 for Junction resident Rony Samir Miranda-Guity after he shot his brother in the chest last week. An arraignment date has been set for Sept. 9.

On Saturday, August 22, at 11:58 p.m. Miranda-Guity, 19, was in his apartment at the San Juan Apartment complex at 4840 California Ave. S.W. when his brother Luis Martinez-Guity, 26, came home. Rony was playing a video game on his X-Box when Luis started an argument with him in their native Honduran language. The two began yelling at each other, with Luis even supposedly slapping Rony on the back of his neck, when Luis grabbed the X-Box.

Holding it in the air he told Rony he was going to smash it at which point things escalated exponentially. Rony grabbed a .25 caliber gun that was in his brother’s closet and shot Luis in the chest.

Another victim and charges soon to come in Seahawks ticket scam

By Tim Clifford

Last week the King County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about scams involving stolen or fake Seahawks tickets and shared the story of a recent arrest of one such scammer. Since that story another victim has come forward and their story has yielded more information regarding this particular suspect.

Det. Michael Glasgow with the Burien Police Department contacted another victim who was taken by the same suspect offering four tickets to the Seahawks vs. Steelers game at the end of November for $300. The victim met up with the suspect in Kent and bought the tickets. Once he got home he decided to check the information on the tickets with the Seahawks ticket sales office.
Just as before the victim felt that the deal had been “too good to be true” and, again, just as before the tickets were discovered to have been purchased by McDonalds and stolen.

Det. Glasgow explained that it is still believed that the tickets were traded to the suspect in a drug deal and that it is likely that the tickets went from one drug dealer to another in trade until they reached this suspect.
