Portrait of a Lady: The Mermaid

By Amanda Knox

On a hot and sunny Saturday morning in early August, families wearing shorts and baseball caps basked in lawn chairs on the grassy knolls above the rocky beach flanking Salty’s restaurant on Alki and wielded binoculars to better glimpse the formations of the Blue Angels soaring across the Puget Sound. Clusters of fledgling divers stumbled across the pebbles, clunky in their thick, black suits and encumbered by their shiny tanks, and dipped forwards and backwards in the rolling water like ducks. Schools of yellow kayaks and white paddle-boats slowly glided by in the near distance.

Pat's View: Not-so-Handyman

By Pat Cashman

I sneaked up to my young son’s bedroom door and peered inside. There he was, with his tiny toy toolbox, pretending to do home repairs. He was pounding away with his plastic hammer---and I remember thinking how very cute that seemed.

Then he spoke.

“Damn it!” he shouted as he purposely hit his thumb---and then continued hammering.
I barreled through the door as if to arrest him. “Where did you learn language like that, young man?”
Like I didn’t know.

If they ever start a hall of fame for lousy handymen, I’d be the Babe Ruth of the place. Fixing stuff is what men were put on this planet to do. It’s not easy to think of another reason. Yet, some men---well, this one---have no talent for it.

On the other hand, if home do-it-yourself projects didn’t exist, much of our most color language and popular one-syllable words would never have been invented.

Smoke

By Amanda Knox

Having been born, grown up, and lived in Seattle for the majority of my life, I am both familiar and comfortable with a cloudy sky. Where transplants from sunnier states can find the rain oppressive and are disconcerted by the enduring swathes of dull to bright grey blanketing the sky, I am comforted by the introspective mists and the silver depths of the clouds rising above. I can breathe.

Last Sunday was different. Last Sunday was something I do not remember seeing in all my twenty-eight years. It was a weird, dry, harsh, cough-inducing haze—like fog, but the opposite of fog.

“It’s really L.A. out right now,” Colin observed in the car on our way home from running errands.
“What do you mean?” I asked, squinting.
“I mean, the weather, it reminds me of Southern California.”
“All the weird dust in the air?”
“That’s smoke, babe.”

My heart clenched, probably in the same instinctual way that a field mouse’s heart clenches when it senses the same thing: smoke. Fire.

Police blotter week of 8-31-15

By Tim Clifford

Hamilton Viewpoint shooting suspect arrested
On Aug. 26 police announced on the SPD Blotter page that they arrested a man they believe committed an armed robbery and shooting in Hamilton Viewpoint Park the week before. The suspect is currently believed to be connected to a string of armed robberies in the North and South precincts as well as being the main suspect in a Capitol Hill street robbery.

Reportedly on Aug. 19, around 10:45 p.m., two men were parked in Hamilton Viewpoint Park waiting to meet up with friends when one of them got out of the car. As he was standing outside of the vehicle the suspect reportedly came up to him almost immediately with a gun out and demanded the victim hand over his backpack. The victim complied after which the suspect demanded he take off his belt and hand it over as well. To this request the victim balked and quickly headed back to the car.

Boat takes on water but no one in danger

A 21 foot Boston Whaler, known for their unsinkable nature, took on water off the 5000 block of Beach Drive SW on Saturday and the Seattle Fire Department responded with a fire boat to help the ailing vessel. One of the boat owners said she and her son had gone out to the boat earlier after they realized it had taken on water, and attempted to bail it out. "The port side pump had failed," she said. But that was inadequate.

Seattle Fire used their onboard pump to pump out the water and right the craft. No one was hurt.
