UPDATE: Lisa Herbold now leads in District 1 City Council election

Update 4:15pm
The 1% lead that candidate Shannon Braddock held in the early returns has evaporated with a strong showing by Lisa Herbold now in front. She holds a 2% lead over Braddock as of 4:15pm Aug. 6. The top two finishers will go into the general election in November.

Asked for a reaction Herbold said, "In the last week of voting we ran an aggressive get out the vote effort, phone banking every night and doorbelling beforehand up through election day. People appreciate a candidate who's willing to run across the finish line, it's indicative of my workstyle too, I won't stop fighting until final bell rings.

You Are What You Eat: Cheese, please. Sweet or savory ricotta

By Katy Wilkens, MS, RD

The other day I got carried away and made a lot of ricotta. Because it is relatively low in salt, it doesn’t keep very long – about a week in the refrigerator. Therefore I had to find several recipes to use it up.

Think of ricotta as cottage cheese’s sophisticated older sister, but without a lot of added salt. Most cottage cheese contains about 500 milligrams of sodium per half cup, a hefty hit against the daily 1,500 -2,000 milligrams recommended for Americans. Most ricotta contains about 150 milligrams per half cup, even less if it’s homemade.

Use ricotta in lasagna and other pasta dishes, or mix into a dip or topping for veggies, crackers or pita. Since it isn’t super salty, ricotta pairs well with fruits and berries. It stars in the fancy Italian dessert cannoli, which are pastry shells filled with ricotta, powdered sugar, citrus and chocolate.

If you are adventurous, try making your own ricotta. As with making bread, you need to “babysit” it, but the work is minimal. You just need to be around to follow through. Equipment is simple: a thermometer, a colander and a cheesecloth.

Ballard residents roused to comment on homeless encampment

O'Brien amid mayor’s action and community contention

Hundreds of Ballard residents crowded the Ballard Eagles VFW Post 3063 parking lot last night for a community-led meeting to discuss the city’s actions leading up to the planned transitory homeless encampment in Ballard.

The Ballard Chamber of Commerce organized the meeting along with a group call Speak up Ballard, a group that started a petition asking the city to hold public meetings before deciding on an encampment location.

Last month the mayor announced plans to build a homeless encampment on NW Market Street. There was public backlash from Ballard business owners and residents after the plans were announced. Community members complained of little or no public engagement in selecting a site location. 1,300 local residents signed the Speak Up Ballard petition, asking time for public input and meetings with the mayor.

Enrique Cerna moderated the meeting. Mayor Ed Murray, Department of Planning and Development Director, Diane Sugimura, and City Councilman Mike O’Brien were invited to the meeting. O’Brien was the only one who attended. With ballots due the following day, O’Brien faced a throng of irritated voters alone.

OPAL recipient of Edith Macefield house

House to be moved to Orcas Island

Today the broker for the iconic Edith Macefield house in Ballard told a news conference that a non-profit has been chosen as the recipient, and that the structure will be donated and moved to a different location.

“The house really will float away, but not by air. I can’t possibly imagine a more wonderful ending for this chapter of the Edith Macefield story,” said listing broker Paul Thomas.

OPAL (“Of People And Land”) Community Land Trust at 286 Enchanted Forest Road on Orcas Island is the recipient of the Edith MaceField house. The organization offers working families a way to buy homes and potentially build assets through a community land trust. They use private and public grants to hold lands and build or refurbish homes.

According to Rural Family Economic Success Action Network (RuFES.org), five percent of Orcas Island working families own homes through OPAL Community Land Trust.
