Woman killed after drivers runs light in Burien

Woman killed after drivers runs light in Burien

A woman was killed, a 10-year-old boy is in the hospital, and a driver is in jail after an accident in Burien over the weekend. The two-car collision occurred at the intersection of highway 518 and 509 just after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. According to police on the scene, a woman was headed east in a late model Toyota Corolla with her 10-year-old passenger when a man in his early 20s driving a black SUV allegedly ran a red light and struck the Corolla. Emergency responders arrived at the crash within minutes, but the woman had already died on the scene. The 10-year-old was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition and at time of publishing remains there in stable condition. Police believe that driving under the influence may have been at play and the driver of the SUV was arrested for suspicion of DUI. The names of those involved have yet to be released as police continue their investigation.

Crimes reported between 10/4/2015 and 10/18/2015

Lend a Hand and Help Burien’s Dog Park Playground

By Michele Smith

As we first reported in July of 2013, Burien lawmakers at the time approved development of an off-leash dog park located at Lakeview Park, 422 SW. 160th Street. Since then, the community has rallied and the construction that was supposed to begin in 2017 has already started thanks to donations from Beneful Dog Food and local businesses like Toyota of Burien.

The story gained quite a buzz after Kellie Bassen with B-Town Dog was one of 14 finalists in Beneful’s $500k “Dream Dog Park” nationwide competition. The local group put together a very creative pirate-themed video featuring Kellie and her dog Bailey. They didn’t win the top prize of $500k but were awarded $20K for the video, the money paved the way to get her dream of Burien’s first off-leash dog park under way faster.

Burien PD to offer Police Explorer program for teens interested in criminal justice careers

By Tim Clifford

On Nov. 2 the Burien Police Department will hold its inaugural kick-off meeting of the new Police Explorer program for teenagers and young adults who are interested in a career in public service. The meeting will be held at the Burien Police station, located at 14905 6th Ave. S.W., starting at 7 p.m.

“Many of our police officers were once explorer scouts themselves earlier in life. Exploring teaches teens important principles including good citizenship, life skills, and leadership,” stated the Burien PD in a Facebook post announcing the meeting.

The Police Explorer’s program is an off shoot of the Boy Scouts of America’s Learning For Life program and offers young participants the opportunity join in on ride-a-longs, volunteer opportunities and law enforcement training. This is also touted to be a great networking opportunity for teens who are considering working in the criminal justice field.

Letter to the Editor

Oct. 15, 2015

Dear Editor,
During the Holli Giffin-Bob Edgar debate this week, I witnessed a disturbing incident that should be of interest to voters. I watched a council candidate (Darla Green) accost a protestor, a small man holding a familiar 8 ½” by 11” sign “Burien, Where is Your Heart?”. The man said nothing, just quietly held his sign. In my full view four feet away, Darla moved to stand directly in front of the man, stared at him with unmistakable vitriol and hate in her eyes and tore up a copy of his handout right in his face. The man said nothing and made no motions, just quietly held his sign.

One of her supporters then stood directly in front of the man, blocking view of his sign, moving to the right and left, taunting him saying “I could dance all night”, “You are amusing me”, etc. before returning to Darla’s side. The small man said nothing, just quietly held his sign.
