Road trips aplenty in new SPSL

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Evergreen, Foster, Highline and Tyee will be going from a close knit Seamount League into a traveling league when they join the 2A/3A South Puget Sound League starting this fall.

The Seamount consisted of those four area schools plus Kennedy and the three Renton schools, but the SPSL is widespread and will even divide the foursome into two different divisions.

Evergreen and Foster find themselves going into the Mountain Division, while Highline and Tyee will be in the Sound Division.

Other Mountain Division schools are Fife, Foss of Tacoma, Franklin Pierce of Parkland, Lindbergh of Renton, Washington of Parkland and White River of Buckley.

Other Sound Division schools are Clover Park of Lakewood, plus Eatonville, Orting, Renton, River Ridge and Steilacoom.

Kennedy, Mount Rainier and Hazen, meanwhile, will be jumping into the new North Puget Sound League -- which is a 4A only league.

All three will be in the NPSL's Cascade Division along with Kent-Meridian, Kentlake, Kentridge, Kentwood and Tahoma.

Help the FBI catch a bank robber

Thug in a Rug is wanted for multiple robberies

In addition to the bank robber highlighted earlier this week, the FBI continues to seek many others across Washington state, and nationwide. If you’re not already familiar with the site bankrobbers.fbi.gov, you may find it an interesting resource. The FBI is hoping that it can make it easier for the public to help us capture these wanted subjects.

The bank robbers site allows users to view wanted individuals across the United States, and filter by criteria like location. Each entry links to a downloadable Wanted poster.

The FBI populates this site with current bank robbery information when we need the public’s assistance, as well as still-unsolved robberies when investigators want to re-energize public awareness. The FBI’s Seattle Division recently added nine previous bank robberies to this site, including the November 1, 2012, Sunnyside bank robbery following an increase of the reward offered by Bank of America up to $20,000. During this robbery, the subject drove a green mini-van through the drive-through section of the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money.

When it Comes to Texting and Driving, It Can Wait

Stop texting while driving

Olympia, Washington – From June 28 to June 30, 2016, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) is running extra patrol’s to crack down on distracted drivers. This is part of the statewide “Talk, Text, Ticket” campaign led by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

On July 1, 2008, Washington State made the use of hand-held wireless devices a primary traffic offense (RCW 46.61.667).

In Washington State, talking or sending text messages while holding a wireless device carries a minimum $136 fine.

Analysis of distracted driving research in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that “young drivers who text spend up to 400% more time with their eyes off the road than drivers who do not text, have 6-fold greater odds of a collision.”

According to the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL), a driver who is texting has an impairment level equal to a driver with a .16 blood-alcohol level. That’s double the legal limit. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that drivers in their 20s make up 27% of distracted drivers in fatal crashes.
