“TURBO TURKEY: THE DARK MEAT”

Turbo Turkey: The Dark Meat features four one-act plays written by members of the Turbo Turkey improv and sketch comedy troupe, and premiering at Burien Actors Theatre.

A young man brings his girlfriend home to meet his parents in the unusual guess-who’s-coming-to-dinner scenario Guess Who We’re Having for Dinner, written by Diana Martin. In Dinner at ‘Ate,’ written by Anna Richardson, a zombie in denial of her identity struggles to have a normal dinner party in the midst of the apocalypse.

When a stuffed toy otter comes to life and becomes a young girl’s best friend in Jenny, written by Adam Hegg, murder and mayhem ensue and little is what it seems. Revenge gets serious during a reunion of family and friends in RSVP to R.I.P, written by Josh Rodriguez.

Presented by Turbo Turkey in association with Burien Actors Theatre, Turbo Turkey: The Dark Meat is suitable for ages 13 and up due to occasional strong language and some acts of violence.

Now for something completely different and exciting.

Since October 2013, the Burien Arts Gallery at 826 S.W. 152nd St. in Olde Burien has featured fine-arts works from throughout the region.

Now in August, the community is taking over the walls of the Burien Arts Gallery.

There’s still time to show your creativity by creating a piece of artwork and bringing it to the Gallery on Aug. 1 from 9 a.m.-noon. See details at www.burienarts.org or call 206-244-7808.

The artwork may be inspired by the attached piece by Artists United photographer Tracy LeMoine.

The community’s artwork will be displayed on the Gallery’s walls from Aug. 3-Aug. 27. The community’s art show will be a unique and dynamic exhibit.

Meet all the artists at the Opening Reception on Friday, Aug. 5, 5-8 p.m. in the Gallery.

In addition, three first-time exhibiters will be showing in the Artists United room.  Chandra Madrona works in photography and watercolor, Renee Klause in acrylic and mixed media, and Dan Bobrow works in colored pencil. It will be an interesting and diverse show. 

The Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, noon-6 p.m.

Project Description

We are engaging with people in West Seattle to help us design a neighborhood greenway that connects residents with schools, parks, local businesses, and the greater transportation network. The new greenway will bring affordable, active transportation options for all ages and abilities.

Over the past two years, we’ve been working with the community to redesign 35th Ave SW to improve safety as part of our Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. The first phase of the safety corridor project focused on the southern part of 35th Ave SW, from SW Holly St south to SW Roxbury St.

SHORELINE--PacWest's Senior Little League baseball all-star team prevailed in capturing a state championship despite playing up an age group at the Big League level.

The contingent from Burien and SeaTac finished an undefeated tournament with a 5-1 victory over District 1 at Shorewood High School in Shoreline on Thursday.

PacWest also went undefeated at the Seniors age 14-15 level during the regular season, then played age 16-18 baseball in the Big League tournament and went 4-0.

It automatically qualified for state as the only Seniors team out of District 7 and opted up.

After opening with a 13-4 win over District 1 on Sunday, July 10 the PacWest team blasted District 8 by a 14-0 score the next day and then defeated District 9 in the winner's bracket final Tuesday.

That sent the squad straight to Thursday's provisional championship needing to be defeated twice by the squad coming out of Wednesday's loser's bracket final, which happened to be District 1.

Kela activated from 60-day DL

Chief Sealth graduate Keone Kela rejoined the bullpen for the Texas Rangers on Friday as they returned to action after the All-Star break, being activated from the team's 60-day disabled list.
Kela had brief rehabilitation stints with Round Rock (July 4) and Frisco (July 7) of the Rangers' minor league system on his road to recovery from elbow surgery in April.

Barnette still standing out

Thomas Jefferson graduate Tony Barnette is still enjoying a solid season, also as a member of the Texas Rangers' bullpen.
Barnette has a 6-3 record with a 2.36 earned run average in 42 innings of work over 36 games. Barnette has recorded 31 strikeouts and walked 12 batters.
Barnette is in his first Major League Baseball season after spending the past six years in Japan.

Ishikawa now a Rivercat

Federal Way graduate Travis Ishikawa is back in the San Francisco Giants organization as a member of the Sacramento Rivercats.
Ishikawa re-signed with the Giants after being released from Charlotte of the Chicago White Sox organization.

The PacWest Senior Little League baseball all-star time only has three days off before plunging into Western Regional action Monday through at least Thursday -- and hopefully on to Saturday.

PacWest won the Washington state title this Thursday with a 5-1 victory over District 1 at Shorewood High School in Shoreline as an age 14-15 team playing in the Big League age 16-18 tournament.

The District 7 championship squad from Burien and SeaTac enters regional play at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton with a 3 p.m. game against Hawaii on Monday.

Pool play continues through Thursday.

PacWest will meet Northern California at 9 a.m. Tuesday and Southern California at 9 a.m. Wednesday before facing Nevada at 12 p.m. Thursday.
Single elimination play for top pool finishers starts Friday and concludes with the championship Saturday.

The regional champion will go on to World Series action in South Carolina.

Highline's Bears don't like to go down without a fight.

They proved it Friday, when they took the Pilchuck Pioneers down to the final pitch in a 4-3 semiprofessional baseball loss.

The Bears had the tying run on third base and the winning run on first with two outs when Drew Lorea lofted a fly ball into the night sky over Mel Olson Stadium at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center that was caught in deep center field.

"They played well all the way through to the last pitch of the game," said Highline head coach Rich Lindros. "These guys know if they get to play the game it's a priviledge. If they put the effort in, the results don't matter. That's what they did tonight and what they've done every night."

The Bears took a 3-0 lead on the Pilchuck team Friday, facing Patrick Stanton, the son of Seattle Mariners CEO John Stanton -- who was in the stands.

Highline opened the scoring with one run in the second as Lorea singled, came around on a wild pitch and a Garrett Terrell grounder, then scored on a base hit by Ben Fitzhugh.

Pool play continues Wednesday, with PacWest playing the champions from Southern California at 9 a.m.

PacWest then plays Nevada at 12 p.m. Thursday.
Single-elimination action for high pool finishers starts Friday and concludes with the championship Saturday.
The regional champion goes on to the Big League World Series in South Carolina.

Majors
The West Seattle Majors age 10-12 Little League baseball all-star team opens state tournament play Sunday at the Hidden Valley complex in Bellevue.
West Seattle meets the winner of the previous day's opener between District 11 and District 5 at 12 p.m., with the winner playing again at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the loser playing at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
