Ballard Crime Watch: Man beaten and mugged; family returns to find mom's jewelry stolen

Inebriated man beaten, robbed near 7-Eleven

Seattle Police responded to reports of a man beaten and mugged near the 7-Eleven located on the 1700 block of N.W. Markets Street on August 18. When they arrived they found the victim swaying back and forth. Officers reported a scent of alcohol emanating from the man. He told police that he believed four men beat him in the head with a baseball bat and stole his backpack, wallet and keys. Officers observed blood coming form the side of his head and advised the man to seek medical attention. He denied going to the hospital but agreed to have Seattle Fire Department medics check him. The 7-Eleven store attendant told police he had not seen nor heard a disturbance that evening.

At Large In Ballard: Flipping the tables

By Peggy Sturdivant

It was no coincidence the museum interviewers from Sweden were in Ballard for Viking Days. The Nordic Heritage Museum’s former Chief Curator Lizette Gradén still knows the event drill intimately. It doesn’t get much more intimate than standing by a hot grill during a heat wave making hundreds of Swedish pancakes. Voluntarily!

Two years ago Gradén returned to Stockholm for a new position as Head of Collections for several of Stockholm’s National Museums. She is also an Affiliate Associate Professor of Scandinavian Studies at UW. She stays in close contact here, and where better than Ballard to conduct research on the role of rapidly expanding museums in urban areas? Gradén was in town last week with colleague Tom O’Dell, Professor of Ethnology at Lund University. His research focuses on the manner in which cultural and economic processes are entangled in one another.

‘Business as usual’ after electrical fire damages building at Swanson’s Nursery

A fire broke out at Swanson’s Nursery in the early morning hours of Monday August 22, and Seattle Firefighters were quick to respond and extinguish the blaze.

According to the Ballard News-Tribune’s news partner, Q-13 Fox, a Seattle Fire Department representative said flames damaged a portion of a greenhouse at the nursery, which is located on the 9700 block of 15th Avenue N.W.

Q-13 reported: “Fire broke through the glass of the greenhouse,” said Deputy Chief Tom Walsh. “It was extinguished pretty quickly. I would say about 15 minutes.”

Swanson’s reported that a concerned neighbor tipped off SFD for a quick response.

According to SFD, the flames were limited to a small room within the large greenhouse. Their crews had to get to the flames through the back of the property and needed to clear a portion of a wooden fence to get to the fire. They believe an electrical issue made the initial combustion. Fire crews prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring properties.

54 unit apartment/townhouse development proposed for High Point

A Land Use Application to allow a 54 unit residential development (eight townhouse structures with 37 units and 17 single family dwelling units) at 6800 31st SW has been filed with Seattle's Department of Planning and Development for a project to be built by Polygon Homes. They purchased the land from the Seattle Housing Authority last September.

Polygon's website lists the property as being called High Point at Hundley, offering "4- and 5- bedroom single family homes and 2- and 3- bedroom townhouse."

They said a sales office will open in the next few months.

Parking for 85 vehicles would be located within the residential structures and unenclosed surface parking stalls. It is Project # 301859.

This is a project with a long and varied history.

The area to be developed is in an "environmentally critical area" but the final Environmental Impact Statement dated September 24, 2004 was prepared by Seattle Housing Authority.

West Seattle and Ballard artists will perform at Bumbershoot

By Sarah Wyatt

Make plans this Labor Day weekend to watch a group of zombie impersonators, nationally-recognized comedians, a country rock band, and a Shakespeare improvisational troupe.

What is this creative assortment that has landed upon Jet City, you ask? It’s Bumbershoot, the Pacific Northwest diverse annual arts event that takes over Seattle Center on Labor Day weekend. With artists emanating from a diverse range of performing, visual and literary genres, the festival demonstrates the varied nature of the arts and culture scene in the Pacific Northwest and internationally.

Total Bumbershoot

Dan Niven performs as a Dickens Caroler, and as a musician. Niven’s busiest performing role at the moment, however, is singing with longtime festival standout, the Total Experience Gospel Choir (TEGC), led by Pastor Pat Wright. The group performs in West Seattle regularly, including a date a few weeks ago at Hiawatha Park, attended by more than 600 people.

Construction nears completion at two West Seattle elementary schools Arbor Heights and Genesee Hill ready just in time for back-to-school

By Lindsay Peyton

Construction is wrapping up at two new elementary schools in West Seattle – just in time for the first day of school on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Arbor Heights Elementary, located at 3701 SW 104th St, will offer the community a sneak peak of the campus during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will also be held at Genesee Hill Elementary School, located at 5013 SW Dakota St, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Both campuses were constructed with funding from the Building Excellence IV Capital Levy, approved by voters in 2013 – and each will offer students state-of-the art learning environments.

Arbor Heights School, a 90,000 sq. ft. elementary, will accommodate 660 students, doubling the capacity of the 1940s-era building it replaced. The budget for the school was $40.9 million.

The campus was built around the concept of a pioneering Environmental Science Technology Engineering (E-STEM) program.

“The big thrust of the design was environmental learning from sea to sky,” R. Ross Parker, senior associate with Bassetti Architects said.
