New ice cream flavor will benefit White Center Food Bank

Full Tilt Ice Cream, Shipwreck Honey, and City Fruit will make Honey Fig

White Center based Full Tilt Ice Cream and West Seattle's Shipwreck Honey are teaming up with City Fruit to benefit the White Center Food Bank to create new flavor called "Honey Fig", available in both scoops and pints, with a portion of the proceeds going to the food bank.

“ This is really exciting.” said Rick Jump, director of The White Center Food Bank. The idea for this flavor has been bouncing around for awhile. City Fruit has provided Full Tilt with local figs, and Shipwreck supplied the honey. This project will support City Fruit, which supplies fruit to local food banks, and The White Center Food Bank that feeds thousands a families every year. This flavor is just the first in the series that will utilize fruit from City Fruit to benefit the food bank.

Full Tilt was founded in 2008 and has now grown to four retail locations and a thriving wholesale business.

Shipwreck Apiaries is a West Seattle pollination & honey company with emphasis on the honeybee. Over the past 8 years their reach has expanded with a honeybee program that focuses on the education, promotion, sustainable and the long-term health of the endangered honeybee.

Public input part of the process for developing a master plan for the King County International Airport

By Lindsay Peyton

Before a new master plan for the King County International Airport can prepare for take off, staff members are seeking public input.

The first of a number of community meetings was held tonight at the airport, also known as Boeing Field, located at 7277 Perimeter Rd S.

Gary Molyneaux, airport planner, said that the time is right for taking a thorough look at the facility, which is one of the busiest primary non-hub airports in the nation, averaging around 200,000 takeoffs and landings each year.

“Our last master plan was adopted in 2004,” Molyneaux said. “We just need to bring the project back online. We have changed so much in the past 12 years.”

He explained that corporate use of the airport has increased over the years. “The recreational flying is down,” he said. “That’s been going on for quite a while. It was hit hard in the 2008 recession – and it’s been a long time in recovery.”

Still, the 74 hangars at the airport are 100 percent leased – and Molyneaux wants the facility to be prepared for future growth.

Burien's Knopp to fight next month

Despite emerging from the cage the victor during his last SFL America: Team Challenge bout, Burien's Brent Knopp still looks back on the event and cringes.

The reason?

Knopp, who defeated Adam Dehart by unanimous decision, was on the losing end of the team battle as Los Angeles bested his Seattle squad.

“It stills leaves a bad taste in my mouth,” Knopp said. “We’re looking for a different outcome this time.”
Knopp will once again lead Team Seattle when they take on Team Central Valley California at the latest edition of SFL America: Team Challenge on Oct. 22 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma.

Knopp (7-1) faces Josh Clark (9-3) in a 192-bout main event. Fans may recognize Josh Clark from his time spent on the UFC reality show “The Ultimate Fighter” where he fought on the show’s 19th season with Team Penn.

The 8-bout card will feature two preliminary and six Seattle vs. Central Valley bouts, including one female flyweight bout between Seattle’s Liz Tracy (2-1) and Central Valley’s Christine Stanley (5-2).

Councilmember Herbold to pursue Seattle legacy business preservation

Information from the City of Seattle

Seattle City Councilmember Lisa Herbold (District 1, West Seattle & South Park) welcomed today’s announcement that Seattle Legacy Business Preservation was recommended by the Commercial Affordability Advisory Committee, and announced that she intends to pursue funding in the City budget to develop a small business preservation program in Seattle.

“Independent small businesses often define a neighborhood, and they need our help, lest they become the most recent victims of displacement as the economy booms. I expect a Legacy Business Preservation Program will give businesses a fighting chance as commercial rents increase,” said Councilmember Lisa Herbold. “It would be absolutely devastating to see a neighborhood business district become exclusively chain stores.”

Foss Maritime partners with Seattle Maritime Academy, brings 3 new simulators for mariner training

As the opening of the new by Seattle Maritime Academy facility approaches, Foss Maritime has announced that they have agreed to a four-year agreement with the academy to support their new training facility for mariners.

Foss has offered to provide three simulators where students can hone their skills, including a full mission bridge simulator, a computer simulation training laboratory and an engine room simulator.

"At Foss, safety is our top concern. And when it comes to avoiding accidents, there are three things that really help: practice, practice, and practice. Having as much time as possible on a simulator is an excellent way for mariners to build their skills and confidence in vessel handling, navigation, and equipment handling," said Scott Merritt senior vice president at Foss.

The simulators will be used in the Maritime Engineering Technology and Marine Deck Technology training programs offered at the academy, which is set to open after October. The Ballard campus (4455 Shilshole Ave. NW in Ballard) has been training maritime workers there for the last 40 years. A new facility has been in the works since last year.
