Refurbished High Point Branch of the library reopens 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9

The Seattle Public Library’s High Point Branch, 3411 S.W. Raymond St., 206-684-7454, will reopen at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9 after being closed for five weeks for refurbishing.

The public is invited to enjoy refreshments and celebrate the improvements from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29. City Librarian Marcellus Turner will deliver brief remarks at 1:30 p.m.

The 12-year-old branch closed Dec. 5, 2016, so the worn carpeting could be replaced. While the building was closed for that work, the Library also took the opportunity to make other interior improvements that support the changing ways that patrons are using libraries and respond to the thoughtful comments the Library has received from the public.

Improvements included reconfigured holds, teen and children's areas, additional seating and power in seating areas and at tables, and technology and sound quality enhancements in the meeting room. When the branch reopens, it also will have hundreds of new books, DVDs and CDs for children, teens and adults.

Melba Jean McConnaughey

1932 - 2016

From as early an age as she could remember, Melba Jean McConnaughey wanted to be a classroom teacher. And although she retired after nearly 40 years as a high school teacher of English in Arkansas, Texas and Washington, she continued to be an educator, counselor and friend to everyone she met. She has really touched the future.

She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at the side of her husband, lover, best friend and life partner - Don McConnaughey.

She was born in Mount Ida, Arkansas on September 12, 1932 to the Reverend E.W. Taylor and his wife - Dezzie Eurcel Montgomery. She was the oldest child and began managing her family’s household with the help of her mom. There was never any doubt she was in charge. It was that spirit to be a dynamic influence in the lives of thousands of teenaged students that drove her to successfully mentor kids in how to read, speak, write and demonstrate critical thinking, civility and with fairness for all. She was famous for challenging intellectual students to not go along with the crowd and by becoming a non-conformist.

New year brings new gallery at city offices

A new year brings new changes.

In the case of the Burien Arts Association, the change is converting from a storefront gallery in Olde Burien to a mobile gallery at Burien’s municipal offices on the third floor of the Burien Library/City Hall.

Beginning Friday, Jan. 6, Burien Arts will host an exhibit of fine detailed drawings by Danny Bobrow and landscape paintings by Alex Trapp at the city offices.

Meet the artists at the Opening Reception, Friday, Jan. 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the municipal offices, 400 S.W. 152nd St., Suite 300. Take the elevator in the first-floor Library lobby to reach the reception.

It’s not next year yet so you still have just a few days to say goodbye to the Olde Burien gallery and purchase some great last-minute holiday gifts.

December’s exhibit features small works—many were shown at Vision 20/20, Burien’s biggest annual art party, held in November. The Gallery at 826 S.W. 152nd St. is open Wednesday, Dec. 21 to Friday, Dec. 23, noon-4 p.m.

The Gallery’s last day at that location is Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
