Not your cookie-cutter drag show: Cookie Couture brings out all the stops for a top-notch event in her own neighborhood -- West Seattle

By Lindsay Peyton

Cookie Couture is ready to shake things up in West Seattle.

The Drag Queen who describes her style as “’I Love Lucy’ meets Pamela Anderson,” is planning her next show in her own backyard – at the Skylark West Seattle, 3803 Delridge.

“I’m sick of paying for an Uber to Capitol Hill for my shows,” she said with a laugh. “So this is personal for me.”

The event “West End Girls: A Drag Extravaganza!” is slated for 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday, March 31. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

“It’s going to be one of the best shows you’ve ever been to,” Couture said. “We’re bringing you Las Vegas quality at West Seattle prices.”

She is inviting 10 performers to the stage.

“You’ll see scary queens; you’ll see funny girls and celebrity impersonators,” she said. “If you’ve never been to a drag show before, you’ll walk away with a complete understanding of what it’s all about. If you’ve been to a lot of drag shows, then this is the show to be at for sure.”

Eleven Tyee DECA students qualify for international competition

AT&T and Alaska Airlines helping the marketing students get there

information from Highline Public Schools

These young people know business. Eleven students from Global Connections High School on Tyee Campus are headed to the DECA international competition in Anaheim, California April 25-30. Alaska Airlines is donating four round-trip tickets to kick off the effort to help them get there.

The students qualified for the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) at the DECA state competition in Bellevue, where 30 Global Connections students competed on March 2-4. The AT&T Aspire mentorship program donated almost $10,000 to help students prepare and get to the state level.

It will cost about $1,400 for each student to attend the international conference. Students are brainstorming how to raise funds for the remaining tickets. In 2016, various organizations stepped in and raised $22,000 to help students attend the international event.

DECA is a non-profit student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. DECA provides students the opportunity to apply the marketing skills they learn in class to hands-on projects in and out of class.

Time for Some Financial Spring Cleaning

Sponsored by Sarah Cecil

Spring is in the air, even if it’s not quite there on the calendar. This year, as you shake off the cobwebs from winter and start tidying up around your home and yard, why not also do some financial spring cleaning? Actually, you can apply several traditional spring cleaning techniques to your financial situation.

Here are a few ideas:

• Look for damage. Damage to your home’s siding, shingles and foundation can eventually degrade the structure of your home. Your investment portfolio is also a structure of a sort, and it, too, can be damaged. Specifically, you may have deliberately constructed your portfolio with an investment mix – stocks, fixed-income vehicles, cash instruments, etc. – that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. But overtime, your portfolio can evolve in unexpected ways. For example, your stocks may have grown so much in value that they now take up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had intended, possibly subjecting you to a higher degree of risk. If this happens, you may need to rebalance your portfolio.

Police Blotter Week of 3-27-17

Assault in parking lot

Officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of S.W. Barton Street at 2:50 p.m. on Mon., March 20 after a caller reported an assault in a parking lot. When they arrived, they were not able to locate a suspect. They finally found the victim. He was sitting in a Honda CRV and explained that a group had approached him. One man hit the victim’s girlfriend. The victim said that he did fight back, but that the suspect still attacked him with either a metal baseball bat or a metal pipe. He added that he did not know the suspects. Officers felt that the victim was uncooperative and at one point he asked them to leave him alone. A witness confirmed the story and said both suspects got into a black Acura with gold trim and fled the scene of the crime. The Seattle Fire Department arrived and treated the victim for a laceration on his arm and swelling in his ankle. He was then transported to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment.

Jean's View: Making Newspapers Matter

By Jean Godden

I have been branded an enemy of the American people. In other words, I am a journalist, someone who worked reporting the news most of my working life. As a Seattle councilmember, I briefly changed roles and made the news, but I never stopped asking questions, seeking answers, taking notes and believing that news, truth-telling and newspapers matter.

It was President Trump who in February attacked the news media as "the enemy of the American people." While "the enemy" seemed just another example of Trump's hateful excesses, it, nevertheless, was an especially chilling statement.

Trump may not have known the history of "enemy of the people," a phrase used during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror to mark opponents for execution. It was also used by Joseph Stalin to kill and imprison millions and by the Third Reich's Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels who referred to Jews as "sworn enemies of the German people," prologue to the mass murders of the Holocaust.

Pat's View: Sleep Study

By Pat Cashman

Here is a headline for you: A NEW STUDY HAS COME OUT!

Now that you have been thoroughly startled, let me give you the stunning details.

Actually this is not a new study---but I newly stumbled across it. Experts in Britain say they have identified six common sleep positions and what they mean. The study was a yawner to conduct---but the results are interesting. They are also a bit incomplete. It fails to include man’s favorite sleep position: La-Z-Boy.

Nor does the study mention anything about people who walk in their sleep. My younger brother Sean used to crawl out of his crib---late at night---and start ambling around the house completely asleep. Once, he was discovered---illuminated by a street lamp---walking down the road. Good thing he did not have the car keys that night.

After that, the folks decided to ensure that baby Sean stayed in his crib at night---and fashioned a hard cover that went over the top of his little bed. It worked well enough---but Sean felt and looked like a caged monkey. It did not help they’d put in a tire swing.

South Seattle College Arboretum survey wonders "Do you know about us?"

If you've never visited West Seattle's own Arboretum you have missed a genuinely fascinating place. It's part of the campus of South Seattle college and the college is conducting a survey to determine how well the Arboretum is known in the community. This will help them plan future activities and prepare for thier 40th Anniversary in 2018.

Here's the link to the survey
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GKVHNQK

About the Arboretum
The South Seattle College Arboretum was established by the College and the SSC Foundation in 1978, in part as the result of a petition by the Landscape Horticulture Program students for an arboretum to serve as their living laboratory. The 5-acre site is located at the north end of campus on a bluff over looking the downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay and the West Duwamish Greenbelt. The Seattle Chinese Garden borders the Arboretum.
