Artist Heather Danso’s Work on Display at Burien Community Center

The Burien Community Center is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by artist Heather Danso entitled “Joy.” The exhibition will run now through July 31, 2017.

Danso creates portraits made with ordinary household materials including recycled house paints, acrylic tints, varnish, drop-cloth, and canvas. Her paintings are based on her original photographs of friends and family—here and in Gambia. According to Danso, the portraits’ subjects are chosen because of their intense “thereness.”

This approach has led to a distinctive experimental creative process. Beginning with abstracts, she created a method of using materials readily available, working from both sides of the canvas. The colorful backgrounds interact with the subjects, creating depth, motion, texture. Danso uses art as a means to create understanding and compassion, to share experience, and to reflect upon that experience.

UPDATE: Woman shot to death near White Center when fistfight turns deadly; Victim named, suspect held on $1 million bail

Update 6-7-17
The victim in a fistfight that turned deadly in White Center has been named and the suspect in the crime is being held on a one million dollar bond according to reports from the King County Sheriff.

Lisa Jackson was hosting a party at her apartment near 107th SW and 14th Ave. SW and her ex-roommate (now the suspect) arrived with a plan to get some of her remaining items from the premises. A fight erupted between the two and Jackson produced a gun but the roommate got control of it in the altercation. As the report indicates she said, she was walking across the parking lot to put the gun away in the glove box of her vehicle when she said Jackson charged at her. In attempting to shield her face from what was a physical attack she "heard a loud bang", the gunshot hit Jackson in the neck and proved fatal according to the King County Medical Examiner which later pronounced her dead on the scene.

Party guests then detained the suspect until police arrived.

The gun was reported stolen according to detectives.

Murray Basin Wet Weather Control facility opens June 10; Celebration and tours are planned

King County built a million-gallon underground storage tank across the street from Seattle’s Lowman Beach Park to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The tank stores excess stormwater and wastewater that would otherwise overflow into Puget Sound when the Murray Pump Station exceeds maximum capacity.

The short walls on the site are formed from rammed earth and the landscaping is meant to let the water pass through the site back to the water table. One issue with such an open site is the potential for graffiti but King County calls professional graffiti removal crews to come in and pressure wash structures that get tagged with spray paint.

The project contains:

  • A pipe connecting the diversion structure to the storage tank to convey peak flows during a wet weather event
  • An approximately 6,000 square foot underground storage tank across from Lowman Beach Park
  • Retaining wall to protect the existing hillside along the northeast, east, and south edges of the storage tank site
  • One story equipment facility including mechanical and electrical facilities, located above the storage tank

Summer fun at the Angle Lake station

SeaTac debuts entertainment series

This summer, the City of SeaTac and Sound Transit are partnering to launch an summer evening entertainment series at the Angle Lake Station for light-rail.

The inspiration for the series occurred last year after the opening of the station.

Brian Tomisser is the recreation and cultural services manager for the City of SeaTac.

“It just started with a brainstorming session once we saw the venue that was there,” Tomisser said.

The City of SeaTac wanted to provide entertainment for commuters passing through the station and for SeaTac residents. From that point, the City built the funding for the performers into it’s budget and negotiated a contract with Sound Transit, a fellow sponsor.

The series kicked off last month on May 10, with the Steel Pan Project.

“It was a beautiful night,” Tomisser said. “The entertainment was great. And the acoustics out there are outstanding.”

Tomisser said that dozens of people had attended the concert - although no official headcount was taken.

The series takes place in the evening in order to attract the commuter crowd.
