LETTER: Burke Gilman Trail missing link plan has deadly safety gaps

Dear Editor

Warren Aakervik and Eugene Wasserman both resigned due to the DAC’s failure to listen to and act on their concerns.

Not just due to safety concerns, but outright fear of litigation, when the first bicyclist dies and the life of the driver is devastated.

The final meeting was looking for a quick ending with no attempt at continuing trail design and development under the DAC guidance.

It was unsettlingly un-attentive to the public and fraught with safety concerns.

Unfortunately the design at the final DAC was not final. The design had deadly gaps in its consideration for safety.

There was no attention to the issues of futilely trying to make bicycles stop for vehicular OR pedestrian traffic.

The lack of lines of sight and issues for improvement were ignored.

The design takes away accesses to businesses that have been here since 1871.

Storm over Seattle

By Jean Godden

Three Sundays ago, a friend and I watched from KeyArena's nose-bleed section as the Seattle Storm won a second WNBA finals victory over the Washington D.C. Mystics. It was a narrow but thrilling win, 75 to 73. Like most hometown victories, it ended in a joyous ovation, celebrated by as many children as adults.

In the aftermath, the adoring crowd watched a telling vignette. When cameramen spilled onto the court, Storm veteran Sue Byrd exited quietly, leaving her teammate Breanna Stewart to accept kudos and answer reporters' questions. Sharing the stage would have been great; ceding it was a class act.

Burien businesses invited to weigh in on potential ban of single use plastic bags

The Burien City Council is discussing a potential ban on single use plastics in Burien because of concerns about the damaging effects of plastics in the natural environment. The City of Burien strategic plan calls for the City to protect and improve the quality of Burien’s natural environment.

The City Council has asked the BEDP to provide recommendations on the draft plastic bag ordinance in advance of their discussion in October. The BEDP is hosting a business roundtable to get feedback from Burien businesses about the potential ban on single use plastic bags. Businesses will have the opportunity to learn more about what materials are included in the potential ban, and what is listed as exempt under the current draft language. The BEDP is an advisory group to City Council comprised of Burien business owners and residents interested in promoting economic development.

All Burien business members are invited.

City of Burien seeks proposals from hotel developers

Burien City Council to select hotel developer in December

The City of Burien is seeking proposals from hotel developers for the construction of a hotel on City-owned land in downtown Burien. The 1.3-acre undeveloped property is located on SW 150th between 1st and 4th Ave and is located just seven minutes from the arrivals and departures gates at Sea-Tac International Airport. A hotel in downtown Burien also offers hotel guests the convenience of a walkable downtown (Walk Score 90) full of high quality restaurants, shops, and bakeries.

“Bringing a hotel to Burien has been a long-standing dream for many in our community,” says Burien Mayor Jimmy Matta. “A hotel will add vitality to the city by establishing a new visitor and customer base for our small, independent restaurants and businesses, and offers good paying jobs for our residents.”
